Dog seat-belts...
« on: March 06, 2013, 06:09:10 PM »
Anybody use one? If so, what do you recommend? I am in the market for one as we are embarking on a road trip to Cali and I want to save room in the back seat of my Tacoma. The car seat and kennel take up the ENTIRE rear area. The idea is to have Chukar in some sort of harness/seat-belt rather than the kennel, so one of us can be in the back seat with the kid if he needs it.

And no, Chukar can't ride in the bed, under the canopy :)

I have this harness for my setter and it came with a seat belt attachment, you just slide the belt thru a webbing strap and clip it to harness

Buy one of these

http://www.owens-pro.com/products_dogboxes.php

or get an easy loader crate if you have a cap on the back.

From a safety stand point you're better off with your dog in a crate.

Thanks all for the input and yes, we are "those" dog people ;)

Going to pick up one of the harnesses like bmcox mentioned...I wish he would just lay down in one spot and not mess with Griffin, his four month old brother, the harness/seatbelt should keep him in place

It sounds like it might be time to trade the 4x4 for a Mini-van..... :chuckle: :chuckle:

I must be missing something here? Why can't he just sit or lay on the back seat?

I wouldn't let my dog on the backseat with a baby in a car seat. Too much potential for the dog to inadvertently land/step/fall/otherwise injure the baby. I would and did put him in a crate under the canopy though.

I am thinking they aren't only for dog safety but also human safety.  A loose dog becomes a projectile in an accident and my 115 pound german shepherd wouldn't feel too good hitting me in the back of the head at a high rate of speed.  I actually only let him in the back of the SUV with a cage type divider to keep him from coming forward.

Our lab sits in the back seat with an easy walk harness and seatbelt hook (just a piece of cord with 2 small carabiners on each end). Works great and makes sure he doesn't get to the front seat. I also have a Tacoma and it has worked great so far. I bought ours at Mud Bay in Ballard.

I just looked and there is a Mud Bay in Bothell, I'm sure any pet store would have it though. The harness is $20 and the seat belt connector was $10 so its pretty affordable and has worked great.
