Hanford Reach
« on: September 29, 2008, 07:19:45 PM »
Just wondering if any of you have hunted the Hanford Reach???  Its pretty close to me (Tri Cities) and I am planning on checking it out pretty soon.  They only allow shotgun (slugs), bow, and muzzleloader.

Thanks for any info!

Specifically I was looking at the GMUs there.  Number 379 and 278 are the only regions you can big game hunt on.

I haven't personally, but I know some folks that have. The best way to hunt is with a boat to access the draws along the river. There are deer out there and there used to be some big boys around the Wahluke area.

Since it is pretty sparse, vegetation wise, the deer tend to hole up during the day in the thick draws. One tactic a buddy of mine used to use was to throw rocks into the draws and wait for the deer to shoot out. It worked for him as he saw a lot of deer that way, but he was hunting archery and never connected on any of the big boys.

the areas that can be hunted legally are pretty crowded these days. There has been a lot of poaching out there and between that and the pressure, deer are getting more and more scarce.

several years ago, a buddy and I were doing a "cast and blast trip" on the reach. We would do several drifts in the boat for steelhead then put in off shore and chase pheasants and quail. As we were leaving the hunting area and getting back into the boat, we noticed across the river on the Hanford side, there was a boat on the rocks and two guys standing over an animal. I drove the boat over to check it out, and asked if I could come over and see their buck. This thing was with out a doubt the biggest buck I have ever seen. Body mass was huge and he was a 6x5. He had shot the deer with a slug gun, below the high water mark. They said the drive up river in the early am, float down at first light and wait until they see a buck, land the boat downriver and then make a stock. I'm not sure of the regs on the Hanford side, but I have heard that you can shoot below the high water mark. Any how, have thought about trying that, though never have. I have seen some tremendous bucks like this however, while fishing, usually across from the White Bluffs.

Cast and Blast on the Reach can be great.  Waterfowel can be good to great, Wahluke area can be good.  I live in the Tri Cities.  Send me a PM, we can get together and I will get you more information

"probably bottom"
"bottom doesn't head shake!"

I don't believe that it is legal to hunt on the Hanford side of the river...not sure, but on two occasions I have seen people given citations by game wardens when they landed their boat at Ringold with a deer in it.  The wardens had been watching them from the Franklin Co. side and just waited by their boat trailer.  I was fishing and just watched the show.
It never changes, but it is always different.
