257 Weatherby Mag.-Rem. or Weatherby?
« on: October 02, 2008, 09:49:27 AM »
Seriously thinking about selling my 300 Weatherby and 7mm Rem. Mag. for a new 257 Weatherby Mag.  I see Remington has two models in the round and I do like Remingtons.  I imagine the Rems. don't come with the long throat and I wonder if that is a handicap when working up a load, especially with the Weatherby rounds.  Would a Mark V be the best choice?  My 300 is a Vanguard and it is a very solid and accurate rifle, I wish it had a 26 inch barrel on it.  I know the Vanguard is offered in 257 and I would jump on that one, but it comes with the 24 inch barrel.  I feel the Weatherbys are best with a 26 incher.
My right shoulder joint will pop sometimes when I have the stock just a little too far to the outside of the shoulder. Then it aches for a couple of days. I did have the barrel Mag-Na-Ported, but it still kicks like a mule.  I hope the 257 will give me the advantages of a super mag. without the recoil.
Another thought is to teach myself to shoot left-handed.  Maybe someone has tried this?

Felk, as you probally know, I shoot a Ultra Lightweight 257, love it. One of my pards just bought a Rem, Model 700 LSS 257 that shoots really well, not as good as my Mark V, but really well. He chose the factory weatherby 100 grn, sp's, same as I've used for 10 years with excellent results. Hope this helps. Let us know what you choose, either one will be a deer killin sum-bitch!! Later

I'm right handed and have shot left handed on several occasions (qualifications) with my .308.  The instructors said we'd be amazed with our groups, and most of us were.  It feels awkward and unnatural but you resort back to the basics; trigger slack and breathing.

The .257 Weatherby I've shot, had recoil that I'd put on par with a .270 Winchester.

The .257 was a cheapie Weatherby Vanguard. The .270 is my Winchester M70 Featherweight.

The .257 kills way beyond what the recoil would make you believe.

I've always been interested in the 257 since I got into hunting. Never have picked one up or shot one yet. But don't tell Jud (257 WbyMag) that lol
