trapping/ hunting/ splinking pistol???

i want to get a 22 mag or a 17 win mag for a pistol to carry trapping and rabbit hunting and such. would i want a heavy  6 gun or a semi auto ruger mk2.  i want something i can just carry aroound in the woods and keep in the truck when i use it.

I have a MkII in .22lr and love it.  I don't think you could go wrong with that or a wheel gun in .22mag.  Many wheel guns have interchangable cylinders between LR and Mag so you could shoot the cheaper .22lr for fun and trapping and the mag caliber for hunting.

yeah like the single 7 pistols. i do like that torrus has a 22 that shoots 12 rounds i think is what it is. i like. i seen a pistol that held like 20  or maybe more
rounds of 22 mag. i just want something that wont fail me. does glock make a 22 conversion kit? that woild be cool

Ruger Bearcat or Heritage Rough Rider (less $) are good revolvers to fit what you are looking for

A Walther P-22 is a good choice for a backup gun.  I'm on my second one, since a friend's son glommed onto my first one when we were Ground Squirrel shooting, and I ended up selling it to him and getting another one.  Ruger must have bought the design from Walther, because their SR-22 is almost an exact copy with a few design changes.  I liked the P-22 because I could slip it into my vest pocket for close-up squirrel shots.

For a trapline pistol I'd have to go with a revolver. You'll appreciate one that is lightweight and I think you should be able to get one that is accurate enough for grouse and rabbit and still kep the weight down. .22 is the way to go . You can shoot shorts and cb caps if you want for dispatching  and also step up to LR for small game.
Downside is loading and unloading when you are in and out of the car. Semi seems like a good bet but I had one and it is not my choice on the trapline. Bugged me that it wouldn't cycle with shorts and I treat the gun terribly so I can see the mechanism being a problem. Maybe that's not you. If you are better at keeping it clean then me maybe your experience would be different.

I can't hit anything with it. I thought it was the gun was worn out. Then I tried another and found out it was the nut behind the gun. My eyes just won't focus on the sights anymore. For dispatching on the trapline though my longest shots can be measured in inches.

A good 22 mag revolver would be perfect. Taurus makes a nice one that might be right up you alley.

 A friend of mine has a sweat little 22 mag revolver.
Be advised, ear plugs are a major necessity with a 22 mag. The Report from this gun is the sharpest (ear hurting sharp) not necessarily the loudest, but I have never had a gun hurt my ears like that 22 mag does. My ears were ringing for days after shooting that gun.

I'm gonna suggest the MKII as well, for the plinking they are just plain fun and great guns to have. You can shoot them very accurately, they're fairly inexpensive too. Not sure what kind of trapping you'd be doing where you would need a 22mag, at least around here. I could see some type of hunting where you may want more power but myself personally I can't shoot a pistol with open sights good enough to need 22 mag power as far as shooting further than 30 yards or so, and a 22lr has plenty of power that far away for grouse, rabbits coons etc.

Heritage makes a revolver with a .22LR and a .22Mag cyclinder that can be had for around 300 bucks.  I have been thinking of getting one myself for some time.

I have a little S&W Nickel Plated Model 34 that was my trapline gun for many years, when I got tired of muskrats and beaver meat it was good enough to kill a snowshoe or grouse for dinner.  Still have the Smith, doubt if I'd ever part with it.  They make speed loaders for the 6shot 22 revolver.  Can't see the need for a 22 Mag in a revolver, tried one for shooting monkeys in china, 22LR worked just as good.

There are a couple hundred bucks.  Id think you could get another .22 pistol for the price.

Try the Firestorm Super Comanche, its a single shot .410/45L, rugged as hell and under $200. Haven't killed any critters with it yet but there is a squirrel in Oklahoma with less fur on its tail.

hahaha thats good stuff. I seen a single shot savage thats 22/410. i can get it in 22 mag. but its a rifle but it might be better because my son can use it to shoot to.

i like that single 6. i had a chance to buy one last year but didnt because it didnt have the 22mag cylinder and it would cost to remake it because ruger has to have your pistol so there is 100 bucks in shipping for same day and then back so thats 200 plus the few 100 to make the cylinder so i passed on the deal.

Are they not interchangable?  I see ones for sale on GB all the time.

when i called ruger they said i had to send in the pistol because they have to match it to the pistol
