Cougar with a bow?
« on: April 13, 2013, 04:47:41 PM »
The Big Cat thread got me thinking about shooting a lion with a bow... What is the point in using a bow to shoot a treed lion?  I don't get it.  Why is it so popular to use hounds to run a tree a lion, then shoot it out of the tree with a bow?  It's not like using a bow adds to the difficulty of the hunt.  I just got to thinking of it.  I hate carrying my bow through the woods and would rather just dispatch the cat with a pistol.  It's not the shot that is the tough part of that kind of hunt.  Thoughts?  :dunno:

I just love to see the cat in the tree and some good dawgs treeing there guts out.I just dont care how the cat gets killed because the show is over after the cat hits the ground.
I just want to hear and see good dawgs one more time in my life.

Because it still counts on the P&Y books as "archery kill"?
Long as the hunter was present when the dogs were turned loose and no electronic collars were used.

meh - I'm with you.  Should be recorded as caught with hounds regardless of method of kill.

I agree- the method of "shot" is seperate from method of the hunt in this case.

What's the point of shooting a treed lion with a pistol, rifle or muzzy?  All lethal weapons aren't they?  Most archers are better shots with the bow than they are with a pistol in my experience so why use a pistol?  There is some degree of want if the hunter is inclined to enter an animal in P&Y.  But from my view it has more to do with the hunters personal preference of weapon.  Why would anyone care what weapon the hunter uses as long as it is legal?

Y'all know I'm all about calling... but I have an opinion.

The dog's do the "hunting"... and there ain't nothing wrong with that!

I agree, the weapon is neither here nor there in hound hunting, the dogs do the hunting. From my perspective, the dog handling and training is where the true reward is heartfelt when the cat is caught.

I'd still love to tag one with dogs baying the the background, but weapon, shmeapon...

Just enjoy the dogs doing their thang!
