What is the best type of broad head to hunt elk for.

you're gonna get a million different opinions on this one...but I vote for exploding heads, kill cleanly and cook your steaks at the same time.

I'd say go with something conservative, from one relatively new archer to another.

But, above all, whatever you use, keep them spooky SHARP.   That can turn a ok head into an elkkiller better than anything else.

i have had the best groups with slick trick, but don't just choose one and force yourself to use it because you bought it(thats what i did). Try a few brands and find the one that work the best.

Do you sharpen your shuttle t's? They come new pretty dull but I've never sharpened them in case that is how they are supposed to be. I wonder if it's part of the reason why they make such big holes.

I use slick trick magnums.  Makes a big hole all the way through. 
However, practice, and placement is more important than which broad head.

This is exactly right. Stick with something proven. I personally used to use the montecs but switched to the G5 Strikers and they make a ridiculous mess. The blades are scary sharp - the sharpest I've found. Both elk I've shot with my Strikers went down within in 25 yard and both heads are back in my quiver with fresh blades and still look brand new. My hunting partner used  Slick tricks and they are also a great broadhead. I've got several buddies who hunt with Shuttle T's and love them. You're not going to go wrong with one of these three brands.

I've never sharpend shuttle t's and have killed a dozen or so elkwith them and never had a lack of penitration . since they sold i've mainly shot slick tricks not quite as tough but cause servere trama and killer blood trails . If you use the mind set of accruracy and can keep it in the pocket all of the top choices will get it done . with the inserts in the carbons a screw and shoot bh has benifits and the shuttle t's typically fit that bil. on a second note leave inserts out so you can set up your four blades to the string . for fast compound bow i'd stay away from two bladers inless they have a good bleeder blade . I've seen fat on elk plug the hole and leave dissmal blood trails .
