Riding ATV's outside of Ellensburg?
« on: April 30, 2013, 09:31:33 AM »
ID like to go camping just north of ellensburg off the Cook Canyon Road. I usually see Quads & dirtbikes ridding the gravel roads up there all the time. Is that okay to do? or who should i talk to to confirm that this is okay? and if its not they must just not enforce it because they are usually heavy on the summer weekends.

Thanks for the help.

Any green dot road it's OK to ride on.  No green dot, no riding.
This includes the Naneum State Forest which is mostly DNR land, with WDFW land sprinkled in, also includes the WDFW lands out to the east....the Colockum and Quilomene wildlife areas.

It is fairly actively patrolled by both DNR and WDFW.  They will pop you for no helmets on quads, your license stickers, campfires if closed to fires, etc....

The DNR has a fairly good green dot map for the Nanuem State Forest on their website.

I would suggest camping up Coleman to the west of Cooke.  There are a lot more opportunities to camp in and around Coleman than Cooke with quite a few creekside camps in Coleman.

ATV's are legal on most state land (DNR and WDFW) and are NOT legal on most National Forest land.

No.
By horse yes, ATV rarely.  But not recently for either.

Get off the road further or walk in behind the gates/tank traps.   :chuckle:
