« on: May 06, 2013, 08:43:53 AM »
Did anyone else get out on Saturday? This was my first time and it turned out good. Read all about it here.

Yep, seemed most people were limiting off the south end of Lopez.  We limited for three and tossed back about 200, it's nice when you get enough to toss the smaller ones.

Our bait is pellets, Alaska fish fertilizer, and sometimes ground/mushed herring or other fish and catfood.  We mix this up and then freeze it in 20 oz paper coffee cups.  Drop the cup into the bait tube and you are good to go.  As the bait thaws, it disperses slowly, it also is less messy than glopping bait into traps.  I like to include fresh fish carcasses as well but the rockfish closure has put a damper on that.

Thanks for the tip on freezing in cups, that is a good idea.

We fished Edmonds/Browns Bay as well. It took all day for us as well but we managed to fill out our boat limit for 5 people on our last pot at 2:50. First time i've fished that area and we had a great time. Water was a bit choppy but the sun made up for it. Our best pots came out of 320-330fow. Had a big fish and shrimp fry on Sunday, delicious! Can't wait for Wednesday! Good luck out there!

It was choppy out there! We had shrimp taco's last night and tonight we are having teriyaki kabobs with pineapple and sweet onions. Good stuff! We will be out Wed, then we may try the San Juans on Sat.

We went on Wed and got 120 more shrimp. Plus we caught about 50 flounder while we waited to pull pots. It was a fun day.

I got out for my first time on wed as well. We put in at Brinnon. It took us the whole 4 hours to fill 6 limits but it was worth it!

If your going to do pineapple with shrimp cook it right away. The acidity from the pineapple will make he shrimp mooshy if its allowed to sit.

Boy, I'll say! Wish I would have known that ahead of time. The shrimp were so mushy you could squish them in your fingers. Wasted about 30 of them. Last night we had a shrimp stir fry, that was delish!

The pineapple has enzymes, not acidity, that break down proteins.  Try putting fresh pineapple in Jello sometime, it won't gel.  I would not have thought about this problem though.  Next time, just sandwich the pineapple between the vegetables and not touching the shrimp.

Good luck Saturday, yesterday sucked for current.

They are calling to 5 to 15 knot winds and 2 ft wind waves. I think I'll try next week.

I got out for my first time on wed as well. We put in at Brinnon. It took us the whole 4 hours to fill 6 limits but it was worth it!

We launched at Brinnon Wed. First pull of 4 pots was decent. Second pull was lousy. 3rd pull was decent. The bad part of the day was that after my secnd drop somebody stole my new super pot and the gear with it. I know it was stolen because I have shrimped that area for 13 years. I know it pretty well. I check my depth before I drop every pot. My pots are weighted,I dropped in 250 ft. of water and had 350 ft of rope. I saw it where I left it while checking my other pots. Went to shore for a 1/2 hour and came back out and it was gone.

Second pot Ive ever lost there. So pretty good I guess. First one I lost because my kid was helping me for the first time. He pulled up on the rope to swing the pot in the boat as I was pulling with my capstan. Tangled the lines in the capstan and broke the rope in a snap.

Just cant let stuff like that ruin a great trip. Will be back up a week from Saturday.
