First legal ling in two years... woohoo!
« on: May 09, 2013, 10:53:56 PM »
So, I finally boated a legal ling, 29 incher, and green to boot.  First one in two years, ugh!

Not all good news today though, lost a shrimp pot and only got 9 shrimp.  Then returned home, saw a dead Stellers Sea Lion, pulled in to tie it off so I could come back later to collect scientific info (I'm the Marine Mammal Stranding Network person here in the SE San Juans).  I pushed the boat off the beach, got in the cabin to start it and... nothing, DEAD!   :yike:  I quickly pulled out my anchor and got it hooked up in the gravel.  The wind swung me in toward shore (which I was hoping would happen) where I was able to get out and walk the boat back toward the ramp.  Luckily, it could have been worse.

A note to boaters - Don't put stuff in your engine well!  I placed a 15 pound barbell in as a weight for shrimp pots, I did not use it today and when I tilted the motor up to go to shore, I apparently sliced through 8 of 9 wires on my engine harness.   :bash:  So, two and a half hours of troubleshooting, cutting, soldering, heat shrinktube wrapping and it runs fine again.   :)

Nice fish loki!! I hit a 30 last week and ooowwweee!!! delicious!!! Hope I can hit one more before it's all said and done. Had to throw back over a half limit of tails yesterday, one pot w/ 79. Sorry to hear about a pot getting away from you, that sucks!! Spendy rigs. Grab a fork and take your frustration out on a sweet fillet.

P.S. I used your shrimp freezing suggestion from another thread and it was as advertised, best way to go! Thanks! Done it everyother way, seal-a-meals that get punctured, jugs filled with water, plastic wrap n butcher paper, and no doubt your option is my new norm. So... Thanks for the tip!

Nice ling Loki. I was thinking about heading up your way to shrimp/fish tomorrow. What happened to your pot? Not enough weight?

Nice ling Loki. I was thinking about heading up your way to shrimp/fish tomorrow. What happened to your pot? Not enough weight?

The pot was one of the large ones and had 12 or so pounds of diving lead in it.  Another with 15 pounds still dragged 2/3 of a mile.  We dropped the last pot an hour before the predicted slack on the outgoing, all of our pots and some from other people, blew to the East.  If you loose a pot off the S eastish end of Lopez, check a line to the SE of Davidson rock, they often end up there.  If they miss that, they will sometimes end up on Lawson Reef even further east.  I can't figure out how we could have lost only one as the others were still near each other after drifting and there was no chop to hide the buoy.  This was my neighbor's pot that came along, so maybe a knot came loose or something and his buoy broke free?

Another hint for shrimpers, put your cell number on your pot, not your home number.  Luckily, a guy had someone at home yesterday that forwarded my message about where his two pots were.

Anyone can catch a ling, it's the elusive and never hungry Sea Cucumber that is the elusive and challenge to catch.   :chuckle:  This is another neighbor that went along.

This is correct.  I will wear out my "waypoint" button by noon, I figure.

Right on.   I used to fish ling a lot up in the San Juan's in the 90's with my father in law.  They were good times. Nice work.
