Hurt buck @ Yakima River
« on: October 12, 2008, 11:18:16 AM »
Was fly fishing the Yakima River below Ellensburg yesterday (10/11) and heard splashing behind our drift boat.  About 35 yards astern was a buck crossing the river.  And, there boats were choking the river.....looked like I-5.  Anyhow, I notice he was favoring his right leg.  When he gets near the gravel bar on the other side, I see he has an injured, bleeding right front ankle.  Presumably shot but who knows.  He gets up on the gravel, stands on three legs for a minute, then bounds into the brush.  Felt very badly for that guy.  He was hellbent on getting away from something....

I hope that guy can get through his injury. Its never pleasent seeing an injured animal especially when its a careless or poor shot at fault.
People get offended at nothing at all. So, speak your mind and be unapologetic.

I think it was somewhere between Milepost 20 & 21 on Canyon Road.  He came across the river towards the RR tracks on the west side of the river.

Speaking of the RR tracks side of the river, saw 30+ head of Bighorn Sheep up on the hill.  Quite a sight.  Wish I was one of those 5 permitholders for that area.

That's too bad, how does a person hit the ankle anyway. Maybe a young hunter.

270 I am not sure if I understand that last post.  Are you saying that just because a deer got away because of a bad shot and because the hunter could not track the animal down.....that the hunter has no respect for the animal???  This is no telling how far that guy had run with that hurt leg!

Before it (upriver side towards E'burg).  Although I couldn't see Canyon Rd. from the river, I'm guessing it was pretty close to the hairpin turn in Canyon Rd where all the houses are on the east side of the road (there's a vineyard in there).  Just a guess though.

Sorry - but a young hunter probably wasn't the cause............  I have hunted with numerous kids and they are really good about aquiring their target and are trying to begin this sport right.  Nice slam though...  :bash: Probably someone trying to shoot on the run, etc....  Maybe it got hit by a bunny hugger driving a Subaru????

Bamalefty- Sorry I guess I never took into consideration that he could have been jumped and shot at on the run :dunno:.

Lots of speculation on here fellas.  There are about as many ways a deer can get hurt as there is you out walking.  Lets hope he heals up,
