Westport in August
« on: June 03, 2013, 02:39:41 PM »
The goal this year is to 100 pounds of salmon (100 lbs. canned, and 100 lbs. fresh), sea bass, ling cod, and crab in the freezer this year. Might have to take a couple trips, but we'll see after a week camping..

So you plan on eating 60# of salmon by the end of the year?  Let me know if you need help with that

I may be wrong, I believe 40# fresh for frozen is the limit... but I've never heard of WDFW checking anybody's chest freezer.  :dunno:

I've never heard of a limit of salmon you are allowed to have frozen at home. There is a possession limit but that is different

Your goal really shouldn't be that hard to do in my opinion.

Your goal really shouldn't be that hard to do in my opinion.

From page 100 of  the current regs:

POSSESSION LIMITS

VESSEL LIMITS MARINE AREAS 1-6:
Anglers aboard a boat may only possess one daily limit of fish or SHELLFISH in fresh form.
-
SALMON:
Two daily limits of fresh SALMON..
An additional 40 pounds of salmon may be
possessed in a frozen or processed form
(see pages 10-11)

From page 11 of  the current regs:

Possession Limit
The number of daily limits
allowed to be kept in the field or in transit.

Processed
Fish or shellfish that have been
subjected to heat (including kippering, smoking,
canning, and boiling)

Seems like you can have two daily limits of fresh, unfrozen salmon - whatever that weighs, and then only an additional 40# of frozen, canned, kippered, smoked, etc.

Reads to me like you can't have more than that on the boat with you.

You think they need to limit the amount of smoked salmon on your boat to less than 40#?  What kind of a lunch box do you guys pack??  :chuckle:

I think it says you have to limit the frozen or processed fish to 40 pounds plus 2 daily limits.  Otherwise you might have people freezing fish and continuing to catch and freeze fish.

But you're only allowed one daily limit on the boat at any time off the coast, and two daily limits in fresh form during transit...

Your TOTAL possession limit, at any one time and all locations (boat, truck at the ramp, freezer and pantry at home) is 2 limits of unfrozen, fresh fish - no matter the weight, and an additional 40# of frozen or processed fish.

*edited to add - I just realized we may be saying the same thing...

Possession limit is the amount of fish you're allowed to have in your possession in the vessel or in transit. Does not say at home.

Sorry, says in the field, not in the vessel.

Interesting... I see why you guys are saying what you're saying now.  Wonder what the actual intent of that 40# law is, then, and why it applies to salmon only?

Salmon is food fish and it is traditional to go stock up a supply.  Say you spend 2 weeks fishing in La Push, you are allowed to bring home 2 days limit of fresh fish and 40 pounds frozen, canned, smoked etc.  Makes the trip worthwhile.

According to Enforcement in Olympia, the 40 pound and possession limit only applies at the camp site, and on the boat. Not at home.
