Dayton Youth Tag
« on: June 19, 2013, 04:48:52 PM »
So, just got done checking the results....Not surprised at all to find I got blanked again this year. Then checked my sons wild ID and the only thing he drew was the Dayton Youth Cow Permit......I was a little confused by this so I checked my list of things I put him in for and Dayton isn't even a on the list???? So either I somehow messed up in the application process....or my son just drew a tag he didn't even put in for!
So, someone want to tell me whether to be excited he drew this tag or not???? I have no idea....that's why I don't think I applied him for it....... Hopefully it isn't going to be a death march trying to get him a cow.......

Thanks for any info.......

Told my son he drew a cow tag......He got all emotional, told me he loved me and gave me a big hug.....Just when I thought this was going to be a precious father son moment, he looks up at me and asks....."Does this mean I get out of school?".......Only if your grades are good buddy!!! I'm so excited for him. This kids lives for the outdoors!!! And lord knows I could use the elk to help feed the kid! LMAO

Thats a good tag. Looks like you can hunt the rainwater with that tag. There are no other cow tags that can hunt it.

He is right about not needing private access.  Most of the best hunting in Dayton is in the Nat Forest.  But as far as it being a slam dunk, I wouldn't count your chickens before they are hatched.  I have killed and assisted people who have killed many elk in the Dayton area and it is a physically demanding hunt.  You can go for days not ever seeing an elk in that unit and then stumble on to them.  they are there but the country is rough and I don't know how old your son is but if he is young it will be a very tough hunt for him.  the country is awesome to look at and hell to hike.  We have a big bull tag in there this year and my buddy who has hunted the area for over 25 years and is in awesome shape had a cow tag last year in there and didn't get a thing.  It is a great hunt but not a slam dunk.
