There is something wrong with me...
«

300 RUM is on its way out due to not being able to make it on the trip I bought it for, and before it's even sold I have a new rifle coming in. Another damn custom...
260 Remington
700, trued and lapped
Shilen #4, 27" (which I'll likely have cut down to 24"), match chamber, 1:9
McM Hunter in Mcwoody pattern, pillar and skim bedded
Bdl bottom metal with mag xtender, which I'll likely put back to standard floorplate
Now what to do about the 270. It and the 260 are too close, but have the 270 set up perfectly and don't want to mess with it.
However, horrid, evil thoughts of turning it into a 280AI, 338-06, or even the worthless 30-06 creep into my mind with truing and lapping it along with a new barrel.
I need to seek help
Bought it bare rifle. Thinking of taking the VX-II 3-9x40 (LR duplex and CDS) off the 270 to put on it, then getting an FX3 6x42 (CDS added) to put on the 270.

It's useless to resist, just let it happen and keep feeding the habit cash.

So the 270 is with RBros for a #3 Broughton (280AI), blueprint the action, coat it, and probably a trigger. Will be topped with an FX3 6x42 with CDS
Here is the 260, hope it shoots!

Travis does excellent work and I have NO doubt it won't shoot very well for you.
But, I am surprised Travis didn't try and talk you into one of his specialties and that being a 6.5-06ai. I know you've already got the 260 but a Travis built 6.5-06ai with 140 Bergers doing 3200fps is a seriously stout weapon at all ranges on just about anything you want to point it at.

To me the 280 should be perfect for everything, overall. With a 150TTSX, toughness for elk up close, accuracy and power down range. Now need to figure how to hunt more so I can use both rifles

You can't compare the 270 to the 260. 270's larger dia. and larger case capacity should blow the door's off of the 260 with a 140 gr bullet. Probably by enough to even overcome the BC favoring the 6.5 bullet. Were it me, I'd take the 280 over the 270 any day. Then the edge on the 260 get's even greater. I think the 260 is probably a great cartridge but it's not gonna handle heavier hunting bullet's as well as a cartridge with a larger bore and case, just ain't gonna happen. I doubt that even the longer barrel on the 260 will help it catch the 270 and the 1-9 twist may and may not work with 140gr bullet's. My 6.5x06 has the 1-9 Shelin barrel and handles most 140's very well but I'd lot rather at this point have had the 1-8 twist. I think most 6.5x55's in military form or designed for heavy bullet's have a 1-8 twist. The longer bullet's need the faster twist. I called Sierra about their 140gr SMK for my 6.5x06. They said it would work but, the 142gr SMK wouldn't. Asked Hoirnady about the 140gr A-max, they said it would probably not work.

Finally got it sighted in. Didn't care for Federal's 140 btsp load, but liked the 120 BTs. Was only from 50 yards, quit before a storm rolled in. Only fired these three rounds with the 120s. Used the 140s to get it close, plus one group, which was .82" for the same 50 yards. Next time will stretch it out a bit.
I'd be fine with running 120s in it and 150-160s in the 280
Update, just put a Timney in it, what a difference!

Put a Timey in it and took it to the range. Didn't care for 120 Fusions, but again is getting along well with 120 Ballistic tips.
So about .7 inches at 200 yards, .6 at 100 yards with two through the same hole. Am sure I messed up on the second shot, not the rifle.

So the 260 should be headed back to me in the next week after getting cut down and bead blasted. The AI, many months away from being done.
Been looking for months and finally found powder! Just ordered 8 pounds each of IMR 4350 and 4831 to try out. Still can't find any RL powder I want. Next up is the reloading kit - gathering things slowly, but surely.
