Blue Mountains Foothills East

Ok..so somehow the girlfriend drew the Blue Mountains Foothills East late Buck Hunt....with one point.  Anyone got any advice on how or where to hunt this area?

Start working toward getting some private land permission. You will need it.

A good place to start would be knocking on some doors. There's a whole lot of private land in that hunt. Have you ever been there?

how about an introduction, maybe some pics or some past hunt stories. We like that stuff round here.

In all reality i never thought she would have gotten drawn.  No ive never hunted that area....i stick more towards the foothills west areas.  Is ther any god state land around the area?

It's 90% private is my guess.
Maybe not that much, but close.

Yep..she gets to chase some whitetail!!  400out...do you have any advice on where to go??  Any public land you know of??

There are some blocks of state land but you better know exactly where you are at all times, its not like it was in the 80's....you will get a trespassing ticket. There are farmers that will let you hunt during that time, each has his own set of rules. Go door knockin asap , soon as the harvest starts you will have a hard time finding any farmer thats at the house in his chair.

There is a fair amount of public land available to hunt with this tag.  The question will be what the snow is like during that time.  The lower elevations are pretty much all private.  Units 145, 178 and 181 are pretty much all private but there are some areas of public land to be found.  Units 175 and 172 have some public land within the national forest, but there is a good chance they will be pretty snowy by mid November.  Make sure you have a good rig and a good set of chains if you are planning on hunting up high during that time of year.  We couldn't get to our elk camp in 175 last year the Friday before modern season (Oct 26th) without chains.

I was drawn for this tag with a muzzleloader a few years back. It continues to be one of my favorite hunts. There are many places to hunt and a ton of bucks to choose from. I wasn't very picky and shot a 5x4 on opening day around noon. I had seen 6 legal bucks up to that point including a rutting buck with his nose to the ground run across the road in front of us on our way to the spot we actually hunted. Any area of the actual foothills near some water there will be plenty of whitetails. I actually used a grunt tube to call my buck in. I had never done that before. It was awesome. You should have fun.
Tip: A lot of the bigger bucks are either on private land or work themselves into the more traditional mule deer habitat in these areas.
