SD card help!
« on: June 24, 2013, 01:10:14 PM »
My camera started giving me a "can not read card, card needs formatting" message. I knew well enough to not re-format. Now I found some online software to recover the photos, and the tutorials recomend re-formating so the card can be read in the recovery process. My card will not format on the computer or in the camera. What did I do, and how can I fix it?

will your computer read or recognize the card?

No, the same "card needs formatting" message shows up. The recovery software I downloaded won't recognize it either (I have tried 3 differnt ones)!

Often you can import the files as a document, and not as photos.  Once that is done, you can re-format your card and manipulate your photographs inside your computer.

Also, try a different card reader

Based on limited information, I'd say that you likely have a dead card. What did you do? Hard to say. I have not had one die yet, but a digital recorder has (similar memory type).  It happens, and they do have a finite life.

Typical-consumer-technical-ability-level (read non-nerd friendly) utilities for formatting (either device, OS, or third-party) typically give up and throw an error at the slightest problems, without further recourse to more involved utilities or data recovery options.

Best bet would probably be to try some of the analysis and/or data recovery utilities tools available on a thumb-drive multi-boot utility package.  One such option is below.

If the data is not valuable and/or you don't have the proficiency/adventurous spirit, you should probably consider it a loss.

I know. Horse/barn door.  Storage is so cheap these days, that you should have a backup of all but the latest pics.
