Oregon in the crosshairs
« on: June 25, 2013, 12:00:04 PM »
TrapFree Oregon to Gather Signatures

On Friday, June 21, the Oregon Secretary of State's office approved the signature gathering forms for Initiative Petition #5, the anti-trapping initiative, meaning that TrapFree Oregon can now begin gathering the 87,213 signatures needed to qualify the initiative for the ballot. The Oregon Supreme Court had previously approved the certified ballot title on June 5, but proponents had to wait until their forms were approved before they could begin the signature gathering process. They have until July 3, 2014 to collect the requisite number of signatures.

I don't entirely understand how this process works. If they gain the needed signatures then what happens? Does the public get to vote on it? Is it signed into law? Is this something that gets added to the ballot in November?
When stuff like this gets brought up, I always wonder how many of these people eat store bought chicken, beef or pork or wear clothes that are made from petroleum based fibers and whatnot but then think that using a RENEWABLE and ethically maintained resource is somehow the most horrific thing on earth.   :bash:

Trap Free Oregon has slightly over one year to get the required number of signatures. If they submit enough valid signatures by July 3, 2014 it goes on the ballot and is voted on in the General election in November 2014.

The required number of signatures is based on the number of votes cast in last years General election.
