Scouting 162...now with a broken foot.
« on: July 12, 2013, 01:10:41 PM »
Scouting is going well. I'm not seeing the animals I would have hoped but it's early and they are still low. It's really just been about getting to know the land better. I have met some great people and locked up some land. Some of these contour lines on the map just look like mud smears :chuckle: it's some steep, deep, and beautiful country. Putting out 3 cameras next week in some spots that look promising. I knew what I was getting into but seeing it from the roads and standing at the bottom are two different things. Love backcountry hunting!!!! I'm burning up some dinosaurs though and I'm sure Exon is happy, happy, happy with my business. I'll try and keep this thread updated.

Just Found Out My Foot Is Broken. Hurt It At Work On The 4Th AndAfter The Genus At The VA Told Me To Just Ice It And Take Motrin. Well After 9 Days Of Nagging Pain I Had It Checked And It's Fractured. Insert A String Of Curse Words Here. So Much For Hiking And Scouting And Exercising. So Pissed Right Now.

I fractured the big knuckle on my big toe a couple weeks back and it put a big kink in my getting in shape for hunting also. I feel for ya man. Hope it gets better by the time your hunt starts.

Is that the one that got a ride with Life flight? If it is, I was the guy that came to you guys and hiked in.
I hauled out 2 guys last year with big bull tags.
Nice thing is Dayton is close to you and you can still drive around.

Looks like a non displaced fracture so i should be good by hunting time. Still lame for getting into shape and hiking though.... at least it was not bad and needed to be in a cast. Just 10 days of light duty at work and a follow up in 2 weeks.

Keep a bike in mind for getting in shape. It'll be a lot easier on your toe and man you can really burn those quads up on a bike. I've been doing it 3-4 times a week now for a month and I can't believe the difference its made. I'm doing 15-20 mile logging road runs now and loving it. Might not be as good as running the hills but its better than nothing...  :twocents:

Just a little update. Doc says my foot is doing good. Should be good by the opener. Been up in 162 every other day or so looking at land and talking with people. Have met some great people. I have seen lots of cows but yet to see a bull. With temps hanging near 100 most days I know they are just down in the cool bottoms.

Put out some cameras on Saturday and did some glassing.

Met a guy who has the Wenaha west tag and they were doing some horse back scouting. I was super jealous!! Had a good talk with him and hope to talk with them more. Never hurts to have a friend with a horse when you have a bull down in the bottom of hell. I hope we both can fill our tags. With horses they sure have a great chance at a monster in that Wenaha.

I have a few pictures that I will post up sometime soon.

Cory, the more I look at that first bull, the more I think he's bigger than the second. Well more so than in person. He'll maybe he's just more photogenic

If your using swype, click the little orange swype symbol on the bottom left of the keyboard, itll pull up a list of options, turn auto caps off, then it wont mess with your words so bad.

I think that the first picture is a bit deceiving. I believe the second bull scores better than the first. His fronts are not as good but he maintains a good length on all tines front to back. His backs are pretty strong too. The first bull has GREAT fronts but his backs are weak. And his was not as wide.
