Mentor needed.
« on: July 25, 2013, 08:11:31 PM »
So after all these yrs. I finally got a boat. It is a nice 17' glasply with a volvo inboard. My problem is I have only fished the salt when I go to Eureka CA. to my cousins and he takes me out for kings. I still have to get a kicker mtr. and a couple downriggers and some salt gear. I was wondering if anyone fishes around Tacoma that would be willing to let me tag along or maybe meet for some pointers. I am not totally green to fishing I have been doing it most of my life just not in the salt. I figure I can just drift and mooch for pinks for some fun but would just like to learn a few set ups and techniques. Anyone interested ? If no thanks anyway.

Not much of a sound guy either, but as stated above Salmon U is a great start and Johns in Everett is a great resource on line.  He has a great book bout fishing the sound for the most part, along with his web site it is pretty detailed for sure to get the basics going.....    Visit Sportco - Tom Pollock is an awesome guy along with a guy names Chet, they will set you up with what works...

If you ever come up to Everett, I'd be happy to show you everything I know. It would be a short lesson!  :chuckle: I do have a few idea's that have put some fish in the boat.
I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I'm not!

find someone that knows wtf they are doing (90% of the fish are cought by 10% of the fisherman. take someone who is part of the 10% ) and take them.

as an avid salmon fisherman i can tell you nothing matters, EXCEPT everything!

what matters?
gear
leader length
scent?? sometimes
bait
hooks
direction
speed
SPEED
SPEED
did i mention leader length? pay attention  every spoon, gear, hoochie, or flasher calls for a different length and people get lazy and dont catch.
using downriggers?
depth
certain gear at certain depths
where you fish
reading the water, is there a bada$$ rip tide to run?
tides!
and last what gear your using at what depth depending on todays wind at the speed your going divided by your e=mc2 :chuckle:

thats for starters, yes theres a learning curve, take an old salty dog with you and cut that curve down to 1 year instead of a few painful ones.

anyone disagree? anyone that says yes, thats who you DONT want to take  :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
