Mercruiser 5.7 Starter
« on: August 04, 2013, 10:05:47 AM »
All my stuff seems to be breaking lately.  I believe my starter is out in my 25' sportfisher.  I hear the solenoid click and the starter was acting tired before giving out.  I have the 5.7 Bravo Merc and the starter is located on the bottom of the engine.  No access and you can't even see it.  3 Rivers told me it takes 4 hours and you have to pull the header, etc. to access it.  They quoted $125 per hour and the starter costs $250 ($750 total) but it takes 2 weeks.  Seems steep and I think I'll do it myself for that price.

Any boat mechanics want to earn a few bucks?

Pull the header? Do they mean the heads or the toilet? :chuckle:

The real hidden cost is if the ring gear on the flywheel is chewed up.  Any chance of that being the case?

check you battery connections , you may get a hard click from lack of voltage . also put a wrench on it and try to turn the engine by hand it is possible that she hydroliced. have you used it lately ? you could just have Rob come up and do it ! :chuckle:

I'm bored so started into it.  I pulled the starboard header and some cooling pipe.  I got it out.  What a biatch!  Sure hope that was the problem...

It won't turn.  Even when I hit it lightly with a screw driver and hammer.  I guess that's good news.    :dunno:

Ordered a replacement.
