Dog pride or what?
« on: July 20, 2013, 10:15:17 PM »
I have a question for the people who are real serious about dog training.  About 10+ years ago in college there was an older dude in a class who competed his hunting dogs.  I had a dog at the time but was your weekend warrior type.  Dog did well in the field but had to live with issues since I didn't have the time and no one to show me some tricks.  Anyways we both talked about dogs and sounded like he knew his stuff about dogs and could tell he had a passion for training. So I asked him if it would be ok to watch him train his dogs.  He says sure and to this day I should of known when he said I'll call give me your number meant NO, but I was to excited and really had intrest in training dogs at that time for the future, and it wasn't like I was asking a girl on a date that had no intrest in me. Right? I hope not, but that was how I got trained for asking.  Who knew dog training was treated like some under ground fight club?

Well as the reader you already know he threw me under the bus and never called. Not only that, he went preppy and started sticking his nose looking the other way.  Is this how most serious dog trainers act?

Also ran into another guy out hunting one time who had his dogs doing some good stuff that impressed me but he set up less than 200 yards from me.  Well he ended up spraying shot on my decoys when he shot a duck out of his spread.  Then later in the day that bozo tried to come over and tell me how to hunt only benefit him while he was breaking the law and almost shooting me.  Again just another trainer that thought he was better than the rest.

You are not talking about trainer's. Just a couple guy's with dog's that you though worked pretty good. I'd have to say maybe they did and maybe they didn't. You sound very inexperienced, how would you know a good dog from an also ran? Seminar might be where you start, put on by a pro trainer. Dan Hoke is in Bend this weekend but he only does pointing dogs. Sounds like you want retriever's.

Do you have a question or are you just complaining the guy you knew never called you back? Or, complaining about some random guy who shot your decoys and had a nice dog but you thought he was a dipsheet?

Where are you located?

Just like in the real world, there are great people in the "dog world" and not so great people and then a wide variety in between.

The best thing to do, is get out with some folks and then judge for yourself.

I don't know for sure about the guy who was a high school teacher in my college class did since I couldn't watch.  The other guy in the in shotgun range had two dogs and they would sit behind the blind and stay.  Was a slow day but he had a few ducks decoy and the dogs just stayed. The hunters would shoot the bird and one dog would retrieve the bird on command while the other would stay sitting and switch dogs on the next bird.  Sometimes they would let the bird float dead for several minutes before the retrieve.  The bird they scattered shot in my deks the duck was in their decoys for several minutes before they shot.  Must of been hoping the bird was going to swim out of my way.  I went back to the parking lot before them and saw his rig which was a flat bed PU converted to dog boxes, I would say 5 on each side like a hound dog set up.

Been thinking of getting a dog but want better handling in the field and will need help from someone who knows how to break dogs from bolting.  Yes I am very inexperience and couldn't figure out how to keep a dog under real control that was too excited to be hunting.  My dogs would jump ponds or decoying ducks in the spread before me.  Those were my two things I could not break trying to be quiet and work birds.  Just lived with it at the time because of my inexperience or I would of just got upset that would gained nothing.  Field hunting geese I would leave the dog at home most of the time instead of dealing with it and what others would say.

Good water,  bad water.

Dog people can be the nicest and most helpfull people in the owrld. Or they can be A-Holes. Seems like there is no middle ground.

I can say it does get a little tiring trying to help people who will not listen and follow good advise. But I'm helpfull by nature so if somebody has a question I'll try and help best I can. I'm not a Pro but I am serious and train everyday with field trial and hunt test guys and dogs.

Sounds like you met a couple of rude trainers/owners. My experience with trainers is completely different. I've been gone working for awhile and had my pup trained by waterdog university in Winlock and the trainer, Andy, is an amazing guy. Incredibly nice, responsible and loves to teach others about training. Look him up.

Send me a PM, maybe I can help.
I have not been involved in the dog games for a number of years now, but I still train retrievers to hunt.
I don't train dogs, but I have helped others learn to train their own dogs.
Spent most of my $$ on huntin, fishin & retrievin dogs, the rest I just pretty much wasted.

This is what you want. it makes little difference how well someone trains your dog if you have no idea what to do when you leave. Take your dog to an obedience class sometime and pay attention to what the trainer is doing. Not training your dog, not by a long shot! Training you!!! Compared to teaching the owners what to do with their dog and how it responds it is a thousand times easier to simply train the dog. Owner's think to much even if they have no idea what they are doing. If I were you I'd take this guy up on the offer.

Ive found out that 90% of dog guys have 100% of the best dogs and know everything..... Don't rely on most guys to help you, i think houndsmen are way worse than bird guys, but just be aware that a lot of guys are all talk and only care about themselves. Some guys are great, I've been lucky to have family and a few good guys mentor me. Just don't get your hopes up with guys and think they'll take you under their wing because most won't.
