4-0 Ranch Deer Hunt

I have contacted the ranch and will go next weekend to scout in out with the ranch's game manager.  I was just looking for info from anyone who has hunted on the ranch before.  And I do plan on getting in contact with the regional biologist once I get back from our scouting trip. 

We will be hunting Oct. 16-20.

I grew up with one of the guys who is likely the ranch manager. They know every square inch of that ranch. I think he has a bull tag this year, so he will be hitting it even harder. Not much scouting will be needed if you can't, but you might want to take advantage of that access while you can because it is an awesome area with much more to see than mule deer. Just to see the huge elk herds and big bulls would be worth the trip.

The growth in the area is not as good as last year, but you should be able to find a 4 year old buck or better.

Good luck on the hunt. While this is a forum, we all need to be aware that like an email or text, it can be taken many different ways. I like to think that no one wants to be rude in their response, but also the person making the post needs to be prepared how they ask for help. Some of the guys/gals have been on the site for a long time and have seen the thread asking for "where to hunt" many times over, but we ALL need to be sensitive to the new hunters or people returning to the sport. Our best bet to keep our freedom to hunt is to keep the common bond of hunting and pass it on to our children and/or friends. This includes new and old people to our sport. I'm thankful to have the forum and hope to continue to extract information and knowledge from it and the people on here.

Sorry if some mistook my intentions on this forum.  I have hunted in many states for the last 25 yrs with great success.  Like many of my hunts there are not out my back door.  I'm just doing my homework to hopfully make this another great hunt that i get to do with my son.  My son loves to hunt and is on cloud 9 because he got drawn.  As a father is will be a hunt that we both remember for the rest of our life's.  I sure there will be at least one good teach moment for my son.

And with hard work and a little luck we will be successful.

i am newer on this forum but don't worry i have thick skin.

Spend about 4 hours with the game manager Friday morning driving around the Ranch.  It was mid morning and about 98 deg out so we didn't see a lot of game movement.  We did see some big White Tail Bucks and a couple smaller Muleys and lots of Does.

The Ranch Game Manager said the last couple years the draw hunters have filled their tag the first or second day with nice bucks.  It doesn't sound like there are monster bucks on this ranch.

If anyone has hunted land around the 4-0 Ranch i would like to hear from you.  We also get to hunt the new land the state bought from the ranch which is about another 2500 ac.

When i lived in clarkston went up around the 4 0 alot seen some big muley bucks just past the ranch almost to the oregon border in one bowl seen about 20 bucks was really nice to see that was a few years back before the 4 o let anybody hunt on there land have fun good luck

I pulled the white tail tag for the 4-0 ranch also talked to the ranch manager I just need to make some time to get over there and take a drive with him also good luck

I've spent a lot of time around the 4-O and there are definitely some decent bucks around there. Remember he doesn't have to shoot the first buck he sees. I'd hold out for a couple days if he can. Hard for a young man to do though. Good Luck and be sure to share some pic's with us when you get one down.

A heads up for a couple places to stay. Th Shilo inn at Troy, Oregon has a few rooms above the restauraant. They also have a few cabins they rent out. And they serve great food at the restaurant. The state park at the top of the grade has a cabin for like $35 a night.
