I went the Hog Ranch route last year, and +1 on the good shocks.  Good tires too

heavy duty tires.  good shocks, spare tire, onboard air compressor.

i would drop the psi in my tires for the rocky flats, then pump them back up

I was up ther this last weekend trying to get to wenas from up in the umtanum in my 1 ton gmc and ended up on a few roads that were supposed to make it all the way through, beat the hell out of us and the truck and we came to the conclusion that my buddies suzuki samurai will be our vehicle for this area.

They also are logging in the Umtanum.

I agree with Bone, what direction or area are you trying to get too, what vehicle you drive, what gear you have.  10 plays are a must, some places you need height to bridge the rocks or ditches.  Kidneys take a beating.

It's my buddy they have two cow tags in each unit, he drives a dodge 1500 with a hemi. They want to stay close to where they camp in the manastash(don't have a clue where that is) and wants to hunt around cow canyon.

We went up there yesterday. Drove up Dry Creek to bald mountain then down to cow canyon and out rockie prairie... those are some effing bumping roads. We didn't see much fresh sign, everything was a few weeks old. There are some road closure because of the fire.

We didn't see one damn grouse either?

Best of luck this year!

Bumps and dust. Take some extra water. The Basalt rock will eat your tires, like driving over sharp points the whole way.
Hunting, Basketball, Cars.... not much more for me to talk about.

You'd be surprised the knuckleheads up there with 2WD vehicles, bald tires and no snow chains. I heard some of the road are better due to the fire on the Manastash?

Lost season I pulled one dude out on may up the mountain. I told him to stay on the up hill side of the road because of all the snow melt the ground is soft and muddy. I dropped my buddy off and I went to sit. Shoot I for got my rifle in camp. LOL  :bash:. It was leaning against my camp chair. I drove back down and the same guy was stuck again 400 yards up.  :yike:  :bash: I didn't see him so I left. I grabbed my rifle and headed up. I saw him digging so I hooked my chain up and pulled him out. I told him to follow me up so I could show him out. CRAZY lol  The funny thing is my buddy ran into him again that day and 4 people digging and pulling for 2 hours. If I would of ran into him for the third time. I would of floored it. LOL

Last year we were running to town and right near the bottom of BaldMt Rd.  was a pick up pulling the biggest 5th wheel I ever saw. He was right on the road with two flats. Trying to change a tire on the slope.

He was headed down. I told him I would have pulled down to the intersection where it was more level.

Can't believe the size of trailers folks haul up that hill.

Crazy.

I have been hunting this area for years and most in the same Chev Z71 (1994) with General tire Off road rubber and have never had a problem. I have been to all the locations on this post. The only flay I have had with Generals was on a trip to WYO where the goat heads went through everything.
