How would you transport a downed elk in a mid sized sedan...

Hey guys
SO one of my hunting partners had to back out of our trip this year and unfortunately he was the one with the truck. Luckily we can still get to where we are going in my city car but it raises some logistical issues if we are successful.

Have any of you guys ever driven an elk in a sedan? Got any good tips on how to keep it cool (cant bring the freezer now that we dont have the truck)? I've heard of using an old sleeping bag filled with dry ice, any idea if that would work?

As a side not, I have access to a freezer that is 4 hrs away by car. Just looking for a way to keep the meat cool until then.

I think you're going to have to bone the meat out and put it in coolers. Probably 3 good sized coolers maybe?

  We have transported several elk in a Suzuki Jeep, just bone it out and put in coolers.  I agree with Jacklope.

Any idea how many coolers are required? How big was your elk and how many coolers did it fill up?

I'd leave the hind quarters on the bone, and bone out everything else.

I transported an elk in the trunk of my 82 Ford Escort one year. (Only had to transport it to camp, maynbe five miles...then into a truck. )  Quarters in game bags, all sticking hoof side up out the back, tailgate up but bungeed down... I stuffed the spare tire and all the other crap into the back seat for the time being...

Suzuki doesn't has never made a Jeep!  Please do not degrade the name of a Samurai by calling it a Jeep    To the OP, it'll fit, just do what everyone has already suggested, except for tying it to the top

The opposite is true.  Calling a Suzuki a Jeep is an insult to any Jeep.  Except the Compass and Patriot.

You could use this and pack it with ice. Nothing would get into the car this way.

I fit a quartered bull in the back of my samurai. It was tight. The antlers came over the seat and I had to duck to drive.

Hauled a gutted, whole deer in the trunk of my Maxima one year.  Just gotta have priorities!  A little blood on the trunk carpet gives you credibility in certain crowds....

Here is what I did in a Honda Civic.

1.  Bring a large blue tarp and an old sleeping bag
2.  Quarter elk
3.  Lay tarp in trunk
4.  Cover entire bottom with bags of ice left in the bag.
5.  Put quarters on top of ice
6.  Cover quarters with rest of tarp
7.  Lay old sleeping bag over the top
8.  Drive the rest of the way home with the AC on or windows open.

Should work just fine.

the resturant stores have those cooler bags that are big enough to hold a goat

I had to do this same thing for a huge 5 point Roosevelt last year. We quartered it of course and stuck both hindquarters in the trunk. We laid down a tarp and had the quarters in game bags. Then the front quarters went in a large cooler in the front seat along with the head. Everything was iced down big time. Honestly the hardest part was fitting the head with antlers in. Make sure your gear doesnt take up all your room because you will need plenty of it!

My first bull elk...Geo Metro, got a nice 4 x 5 mulie and a 4 x 5 elk.  Elk was quartered, mulie was dressed and had his head in the passenger side.  It was in Montana and the weather was freezing, so I just opened the windows and wore my layers.  The hatchback was held partially closed with bungees.  Stopped at a game check station and the person behind me had to get out and take pictures.
