Westside Elk Trail Cam Pics
« on: August 16, 2013, 07:18:10 PM »
This is my first year Elk hunting. I have busted my rear scouting and researching and hopfully looks like it could pay off!!! These are from a 6 day soak. The dates and times are obviously wrong, forgot to set them....

Good work dude!

I'm a beginning Elk hunter so if you could share how you developed your area and made the decision of where to plant your cameras that would be awesome.

NOT asking you to give up your honey hole, just wondering general details about terrain, sign you saw, and such.

Great pics!

Wose, I'd say the number one thing I have learned is to spend as much time in the woods as possible. Also try to go the extra mile, or the extra 100 yards through the thick stuff no one else will go through. This is my third spot I have located bulls by doing this. I feel like there is elk sign everywhere on the west side once you find it trace it back to a feeding, drinking, bedding, or area with rut sign. Then as far as the trail cam ( I am a real novice here) I just put it in a spot that had multiple trails going to a spot I seen they had been feeding. Hope this helps! Feel free to pm me if you have other questions .

I may need some advice. It seems these elk have been in this small clearing between 4 am and noon. They are entering from the north side and the trail I made is on the south side. It's way too thick to get to the north side of them in the dark, and the prevailing wind seems to be from nnw.  I set up a treestand 20-30 yards from there entrance thinking it would be an evening spot. How would you guys approach this.

Not exactly a trail cam picture, but I saw this guy down the road from one of my hunting spots. Sorry its fuzzy, it was really dark but you can make out the size of the rack:

Went out to the spot I got these Pics from to put the final touches on my tree stand. Zip tied some branches to it, and put a few accessory hooks up. I was getting down and a good size bear came stumbling along and laid down 15 yards from my stand....I watched him for a bit then made some noise, he sniffed a few times and didnt move until I started walking toward him yelling at about 10 yards. He then took off. I have a bear tag just didn't have a gun lol....Hope he doesn't scare my Elk away!!!!
