How do you screen fishing buddies?

Well over the last 3 years I have quite a few offers that "We" need to go fishing by friends.
So the time and the day are set, Just to have them call when I'm hookin up the boat and they have to make other arrangement's
Case in point was I had a night fishing trip on Friday for Kokes on Loon over here. The other party called at quarter after 7. This is 30 minutes before I hook up and get ready to roll. So I postpone the trip since I won't fish at night alone. He asks if maybe a later time. OK then lets make a Sunday run for German Browns hit the water at daylite.
I have most everything loaded in the boat now and was going to go try and get some Beauty sleep. Lord knows I can use a ton of it. 
Just got off the phone he has another excuse!!

Not sure what the answer is.

At this point I wouldn't offer. If they want to go, give them the time you are pushing off and if they aren't there they aren't there. It's less stressful to not have worry about people showing up. Plan for yourself, and if they show up, hey, you got a partner.

If it has to do with cold fried cheeken, Ice water out of bottles and just hanging out . "She's all in"

Let's me know when we need to hit the beach and she has a bag of treaties in the boat.

Got gas money, you're my new fishing buddy....     Had a guy that would never offer up his share, not invited any more, another one that is more than generous since he has had his own boat, welcome any time.  However, this same guy tends to cancel at the last minute so I always have a back up plan.  Be honest with them and let them know that one cancellation is understandable, but the second last minute cancel will get you invited no longer.

When I pull the boat out of the drive it is full of gas and ready as well as the truck. I even have enough gear they don't need to bring anything but show up.
Throw in some snacks for ya and drinks.   
The boat is large enough I can fish safely by myself but the Dawg just can't make good conversation.

 Also she's not very good with the net!!!

Can't wait until I start hitting the snake for Steelhead.

Sounds like a newly wedd or a guy with kids.  I tend to stay away from both.  Always something that comes up.  Plus there is nothing worse than a fishing partner that can't stay off that dumb phone.  I did a two day tournament one time with a partner that fished a total of about 30 minutes because he was talking with his new wife 90% of the time.  We took second place and missed 1st by three pounds and a few ounces   Never took him fishing ever again.  Was planning on fishing another tournament and the guy (company picked) shows up at the boat launch with his two kids.  "They can fire me I'm taking my boat and going home!"  When I go fishing I'm "Gone Fishing!"  The outside world no longer exists until the boat hits the dock or the boots are in the truck.  If you don't like it, don't ask to go fishing with me.  I'm just as happy fishing by myself.  In fact, most of the time I prefer it that way!

But at least your guys back out before you leave the house!  Nothing worse than getting into your spot waiting for the bite and tide to get just perfect and your fishing partner says, "I need to be back home in an hour!  The wife only gave me three hours away this morning!"  What!!!!  Pull up your #@^)*& britches there Nancy!

great attitude for a day on the water... common sense..... snacks? and or beer. appreciative for the effort no matter the results!!! always welcome. if you actually know what your doing, ie... fishing... filleting fish... backing up a trailer... steer a boat while maintaining gps course and downrigger angle .... inner circle status.

I have a rule for myself. I try to take out 10 people per year that are new to fishing or new to fishing saltwater. I have invited 8 people this year. 4 have shown up, 4 have not. Have not been able to get everyone a fish for dinner but most eat pretty well. Of the 4 no shows, there has been a pretty good mix of excuses. Some worthy, some not. This is one of the reasons i have my boat. I want to help people get into the sport. Its fun for me. I dont have regular fishing buddies. I take out those that want to go.

I hate it when people cancel on me at the last minute, but I know things come up. I give 2 chances then I'm done. This year I've had to cancel a couple of trips myself. I hate doing that even more than having others cancel on me. I do not want to be the guy labeled unreliable.

I rarely fish with anyone...I have one buddy that I fish with off and on, but we always meet up on the river. I fish with my dad, brother and girlfriend. I need a buddy with a sled! Id gladly buy gas

I have kids,.. so when people offer to take me fishing I either politely decline or tell them i'll let them know for sure later.  I hate when people say "yes 100% we're going, only to cancel on the last second.  if you're not sure if you're gonna go, don't say yes!! 

usually what I do if I offer to take someone hunting or fishing is i'll plan a trip that I can do without that person and tell them the time i'm going, and if they show up, great if they don't,... trip isn't ruined i'm still going.

Seeing as I have been out of fishing for so many years,, I would be picking my partner the same as I would anyone else I would want as a friend. When I did get an offer, I make sure that I have enough to help cover half the cost of go go juice, or at least bait and ice.

Are you bored easily and whine if things are perfect and the fish aren't biting? Do you cancel at the last minute......more than once? If you answered most questions yes and a few no then you are good to go.

I had such a hard time finding someone to take me. I never flaked out and always offered to give money for gas and bring food (usually lumpia). And could never entice someone  to take a chance on me.  They guy that always said he would take me always flaked out.  Now that I have my own boat I go when I want and when I have someone who asked to go I say show up at this time at this place with money for gas and food. If they are there there going if not on we'll.

    I've always applied this except when it came to my wife.  She pretty well gets away with murder when it comes to breaking fishing rules.  We almost had to sell the boat because she wouldn't stop bringing bananas on board.

Fall chinook harvest to be allowed in the Snake River

Action: The Snake River will open for harvest of hatchery fall chinook.

Locations: Upstream from the mouth of the Snake River, beginning at the south-bound lanes of the Highway 12 Bridge (near Pasco) to the Oregon State line (located approximately 7 miles upstream of the mouth of the Grande Ronde River).

Dates: Sept. 1 through Oct. 31, 2013

Species affected: Chinook salmon.

Reason for action: There is a large run of upriver bright hatchery fall chinook expected to return to the Snake River. Significant steelhead fisheries also occur in the area, and some hatchery fall chinook are expected to be caught during steelhead fishing. Retention of hatchery fall chinook is not expected to increase impacts to Endangered Species Act listed wild fall chinook. Therefore, adipose clipped hatchery fall chinook that are caught can be retained in the Snake River.

Other Information: The salmon daily harvest limit in the Washington portion of the Snake River is three (3) adipose fin-clipped hatchery fall chinook adults (24 inches in length and larger), and six (6) adipose fin-clipped hatchery jack fall Chinook (less than 24 inches). Minimum size for chinook that can be retained in the Snake River is 12 inches.


Harvest of hatchery chinook (adults and jacks) is allowed seven days per week. Anglers must cease fishing for salmon and steelhead for the day once they have retained three (3) hatchery steelhead - regardless of whether the salmon daily limit has been retained. Adipose fin-clipped fish must have a healed scar at the location of the missing fin. All chinook and steelhead with unclipped adipose fins must be immediately released unharmed. In addition, anglers must use barbless hooks when fishing for chinook or steelhead in the Snake River. Anglers cannot remove any chinook or steelhead from the water unless it is retained as part of the daily bag limit. Anglers should be sure to identify their catch because returning unmarked chinook salmon, coho salmon and steelhead are also in the Snake River during this fishery.

Anglers are reminded to refer to the 2013/2014 Fishing in Washington sport fishing rules pamphlet for other regulations, including possession limits, safety closures, etc.

Angler catch rates will be monitored and Washington Snake River salmon harvest opportunities may be closed prior to Oct. 31 based upon on-going run size and harvest evaluations.


Looks like I'm making several Lewiston runs very soon.

When Springer season was running for the 2 day a week season in the pool below Little Goose I invited him and he backed. Told him where I was and the gear was in the truck he needed nothing but to show up.

My answers where.   Yes it is!    Yes I am!!  Yep Taking my Dawg!!

10000 chinooks and steelhead came over Bonneville yesterday they are on they're way.
