Rimfire Scope vs Usual rifle scope
« on: August 28, 2013, 02:29:24 PM »
I have been told that a .22 needs a Rimfire scope, If so why? Or does it matter?

I don't know if that's true, I wouldn't put a rim fire scope on a center fire rifle though.

I think the only difference is the factory setting on the parallex distance in non-adjustable scopes.

"Rimfire" specific are set @ I believe 75 yards vs 100 for "centerfire" scopes, or distances close to those.

I use standard, 1" tube, centerfire scopes on all .22's I have had, never had any issuses with seeing the target.

Airgun scopes are a different story though.

You can put any scope on it. Get one with an adjustable parallax. If you are shooting paper it will make a big difference in accuracy because the .22 round changes a lot depending on distance.

I have a Mueller APV on both my 22 Mag and my 17 HMR.  Works great with both rifles.

For $129 its a gret scope.  I wouldn't waste my hard earned cash on a rimfire specific scope.

I'd go with a regular scope.  Only because you then have the option of switching it with scopes on your other big rifles.  I have never had a problem shooting non-rimfire scopes on rimfires as far as parallex.

I have a Burris scope on one of my 17 HMRs, and a BSA Sweet 17 on the other one.  (Bought it that way, and it works good.)  The only difference is the size of the rings if you use the grooves in the rifle receiver.  if you use a scope mounting base on the gun, it's probably a standard Weaver/Picatinny ring mount.  I had a cheapie Simmons scope on my 17, at first, and by the end of the day, glassing for Ground Squirrels, it was like there was a suction cup trying to pull my eyeball out.  I put a good Burris scope on it, and that ended the problem.  I just put an Alpen 6 to 24 scope on my latest AR build, but haven't shot it yet, but it looks like a nice scope.  I talked to another guy that has an Alpen scope, and he loves it.  It makes no difference whether it's a rimfire scope or a centerfire scope, but get the best one you can afford.  :twocents:
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

When Bernie Madoff did it, it's called a "Ponzi Scheme"
When Government does it, it's called "Social Security"
