Another nice velvet buck for Mongo
« on: September 05, 2013, 09:19:32 PM »
Got this guy just a couple miles from last years big drop tine. Not in the same class but scored him around 176 give or take a couple inches, and its the biggest one on land I could hunt.

Congrats Mongo. Way to get it done....again.

Another solid Trophy!  I liked the pic with you and your daughter.  VERY COOL that she was able to be part of the hunt with you.

Do you like the velvet bucks?  I shot my first one this year.  I have never been much of a velvet fan.  I really liked how your droptine buck turned out.   That taxidermist did a great job.

Field dressed this buck weighed in at 215 lbs. With the velvet on it had 41" of mass. Not sure how he does it but my kid can get it done.

He sure does!   Same genetics as the drop buck?   Massive and tight.

Yes, on the drop tine it had a weird knife blade looking point and so does this years buck.

Thanks guys, and to answer your question Bone no I'm not a big velvet fan either. Its just that the bigger buck are the last to rub it off in the area I hunt. As a matter of fact my dad needed something to do a couple days ago so he stripped the velvet off. I scored the buck again and came up with 174.5 which is only 2 inches less then what I scored it with the velvet on. I think someone said they take 5% off the score when you keep the velvet on  :bdid: that's not even in the same ballpark, at least on my buck.
Does anyone know the best way to get some color in the horns? I've herd of shoe polish, is that the way to go? This baby is bleached white right now.

I am probably going to take mine out and beat up a tree or two.   Maybe by the road to excite some hunters. :chuckle:   I prefer natural as possible and hate stains.  There is a method that works pretty good.  It has to do with old minwax and mud.  Its probably on here in the shed section somewhere.   I have used it and its about as natural as it gets for staining without the stain look, while restoring sheds and such.  I'll see if I can find the link.

Nice buck mongo! Get some deer antler magic off ebay and try it on a shed or something to see how you like it. I started using it this year and have done some killer re-colors on some sheds.....
