Need help with areas around Winthrop
« on: September 07, 2013, 01:36:41 PM »
Really in need of some areas with good deer sign, not trying to take anyone's spot but just need a little help! I'm only 17 but love the hunt, my grandpa is my hunting partner and do to work and other issues for him we haven't been able to go out and scout, I would really appreciate the help! Hoping to close the deal on my first buck this year!

Loop loop will have lots of orange, year before last there weren't that many people up by 8 mile.  Did see wolf tracks up on buck mountain, along with 4 big does with fawns.  If you stay on the left side of the river there was plenty of spots to setup camp.  I had a nice camp setup by 8 mile, just not a lot of deer, drove the up and around the pass by Tiffany Springs and back down to conconully, turn right at the state park and you can loop back to Winthrop.

we went up loop loop last year, saw 3 deer, 1 was a small buck I believe, ran into timber before we could make out what it really was and we lost it

My recomendation would be ramsey creek 3-4 miles past the gate or gardner mountain to the top road access just past early winters cabins. I hunted the lower portion of pearygin with two doe taggs last year got one saw six deer on legal ground woyldnt waste my time.

At 17 you will have plenty of years ahead of you to scout and come up with a list of preferred spots around there.

My suggestion is get a couple quality maps, hit the areas already suggested, and start branching out from there. :twocents:

Get lost around Bridgeport........... I don't know exactly where I was but it wasn't Rez  land and there are a lot of deer around the grain fields.
The first bird may get the worm, but it's the second rat that gets the cheese.

Try the Big Buck Game Area and Newby Ridge.

Come on...he's 17, trying to get out with his grandpa...
I would echo what another said, get some maps, an try an get off the roads as much as possible. That area is a migration route: lots of deer = lots of orange (particularly road hunters) There are some cool spots, just be prepared to drive way back in there, then hoof it from there. A buddy took me out there last year and we all had a great time. Good luck.
For Pete's sake...pick up your feet, man!
