How close are the silvers!?
« on: September 14, 2013, 05:15:25 PM »
It would be sweet if they had some "Run tracker" type deal where you could track the coho's through the sound. All I know is i'll have the last go at them at Totten inlet before the hit Kennedy creek.

I grew up at Kamilche and the coho run is practically non existent!  You must be thinking of chum if talking about Totten.  On the other hand, around Hartsine, the coho should be in now.  I plan to be spending next weekend camped out on the boat targeting them in Pickering.  We had a hell of a run last year at this time.  The kids and I wound up with 16 coho from 6 pounds on up to 14.  We use to have a hell of a run up Kennedy and Skookum Creeks but they were all hatchery.  That hatchery has not been in operation in many years so the runs died off.  There are a few left but a very few, unless I am missing something.  We have been lobbying hard for the Squaxin's to re-open that hatchery and "flood the bay" with coho and chinook but were told point blank by the tribal elders that they were not interested in any way, shape or form.  They want to focus all of their efforts on the casino, smoke factory and golf course.  Sorry about the long winded response.

FLIZZ, just got off the phone with my Squaxin buddy.  He said that it is supposed to be a very poor year for coho in the South Sound.  So far the tribe has gotten hardy any coho, not enough to bother with and their chinook season was awful as well.  If it is going to happen, the 24th through around the 10th should be the peak, according to averages of my past records.

Well that's a bummer. I don't know exactly how you would categorize last years run, but if it's anything like that I'll be happy. That time frame sound spot on by the way, good call.

Last year's run was a lot better than usual.  It has been at least 20 years since we have had a real strong coho run in Totten.  I remember pointing my bow into Windy and Barron Points, letting the tide drift me across them while throwing blue pirate wiggle warts and green Blue Fox's.  We would hook a couple dozen fish every time we went out and only filled our limit with fish over 14 pounds.  Man, I miss those days!
