hunter harassment
« on: September 14, 2013, 09:50:07 PM »
Man, it's TOUGH to be the bigger person when confronted with hunter harassment! Tonight, my 6 YO daughter and I were effectively run off the property of my friend by neighbor upset we were hunting in the area. Once we were seen in the blind (woman wandered up a trial on another neighbors place we had permission from and talked to us.  She seemed decent enough while we were talking...), they began shooting a pistol every twenty minutes or so, intent on spooking the deer. Judging by the deer movement, it wasn't working, but my daughter was spooked. Not wanting to spoil her passion for hunting, I packed up and we left without incident. I saw the homeowner watching me load the pickup, and thankfully no incident transpired.

As ambassadors for the sport of archery, remember to be the bigger person, no matter how temporarily satisfying it might seem to confront the detractors  :twocents:

Ran into this last year w/a neighbor. As soon as they saw our blind they said "O MY GOD HUNTERS", that evening they started shooting. Didn't spook the deer at all. I had my daughter w/me. We just prayed that God would bring us a deer and He did. I hunted the next week every evening and at the deer hour they would start shooting, I had to wear ear plugs and you gusted it I shot a nice buck. We pray for that neighbor all the time. Don't let them spook you off. I tough my daughter not to let other people dictate what you do on your land or land you have permission to hunt on. Now if they are shooting your direction or it's provable they are harassing wildlife and or you, call the cops and or the Game Dept. Good luck, I'm sure I will have to deal w/the same neighbor this year. They told us they are not against hunting it's the shooting :dunno: When they found out I was bow hunting this year they were pissed. So what is it? "It's all about CONTROL".

CALL THE POLICE RIGHT AWAY !!!!!!! I hate that. had the same problem a long time ago at a private airstrip i had permission to hunt at. Had written permission even. had a guy give me a ear full and i didnt get nasty with him as he was much older than i but i asked him to get lost and he refused. I called 911 and the sheriff that came told the guy if he continued he would be arrested and charged with felony harassment. not sure if he really would have hauled the guy off but he got the point and i never saw him again.
The only person who has failed is the one who never tried.

Turn them in it is against the law, and they need to be dealt with.  I used to call in harassment every year for the guys when they would duck hunt a specific site that some non hunting buttnugget bought the house next to, and every year they would have a chat with the cops, I think they finally gave up after the third year....

hunter harassment is illegal....

wouldn't the cops tell me it's legal to shoot on your own land?  my buddy's house is pretty close to the property line, as is the neighbors.  i didn't want to cause MORE animosity between them, as they already don't like each other.  apparently the gal pulled a pistol when Barry's chickens were in her yard...  :yike:  unhinged much?  :dunno:

it is legal to shoot on her land however based on the situation its pretty clear hunter harassment, and lots of times these people need to hear from the authorities that they can hate hunters all they want but they cannot harass them.

and we had a neighbor come in our yard shooting chickens when we were kids....he was very unhinged.... :o.....I would have reported that too....lol

call the cop, people will just keep doing it and getting away with it unless you do something about it.

The cops won't be able to do anything, because intent is not clear.

Sivart33, I agree with your comments.

The WAC prohibiting harassment of fishers/hunters is actually here: http://apps.leg.wa.gov/rcw/default.aspx?cite=77.15.210

RCW 77.15.210 is the correct statute.

Any law enforcement officer can cite for this but.....like all other fish and wildlife offenses they will either just warn the person, or maybe actually call a WDFW Officer.

bigtex!!!  glad to see you around!  thanks for clarifying things!

in the end, i didn't want to cause more trouble for my friend by getting cops involved.  and it would have been my word against theirs as to why they were shooting.  i doubt it would have ended with a citation.  if i hunt there again and it happens again, and my young daughter isn't there, i might be more apt to call...
