New rifle for the wife

My wife is finishing up her hunters safety so I'm shopping for a rifle.  I'm looking for a youth model .243 so my boys can use it as they get old enough to hunt.  Any suggestions?  We're a young family on a budget so keep that in mind with your suggestions   Let me know your experiences, good and bad.

Ruger American compact (20" barrel) in 7mm-08.

When every dollar counts, Savage will give you the most gun for the least dollars.  Axis youth bolt action can be had under $300.  If you can afford around $600, Remington 700 is hard to beat, SPS youth model, and you'll never wish you had spent a few more.  I'm not familiar with the Ruger American compact but it looks nice too and is in between these two in price.

I've got the Ruger American, and it's a great gun. Got it at Fred Meyer for around $250 i believe.

The Ruger American comes with a factory adjustable accutrigger (Rugers version) and tang safety.

I noticed that the Savage Axis doesn't have the Accu-trigger.  I would like the trigger to be adjustable, I hate a bad trigger.

You should go check them out, I know Tmike just bought one with a 20" barrel and his son really shoots it well.

Savage model anything with accutrigger even my ten year old 75 pound daughter shoots my 308 accuracy I also agree with 7mm_08 if she haas a problem recoil it is just a necked down 308

I saw that the Savage Axis was on sale at Cabela's for $299.99 a few weeks ago.  Not sure now. 
So my friend bought one in stainless steel and uses all the discounts;  applied for the Cabela's CC got 20% off; used the 10% off that he received in the mail; used his 5% off for military.  He got the rifle at $195.00 before tax.


The Axis does have a heavy trigger and a creep, it's a very easy fix though.  I fixed his 7lbs trigger down to 2lbs.  There is a Yutube video on how to perform a trigger job on the Axis, just google it.
