gmu 154
« on: September 26, 2013, 10:20:45 PM »
So I'm new to hunting this will be my first year, I'm planning on doing deer MR.  So I've been looking at areas close to me and have decided on going to gmu 154, I know its all pretty much private land but I did go and do some scouting and there's a lot of feel free to hunt land do anybody hunt this area and maybe give me some advice on this area like if you can camp there at all because I was thinking of staying up there for a few days but I don't want to just set camp on some ones property any help would be great thanks

camping will be pretty limited.  maybe the RV park between waitsburg and dayton?  lots of hunters in 154, and lots of private land, as you found.  the FFTH land gets hit pretty hard.  i grew up in 154 and there are good deer there, but they can be hard to access.

Harvested several WT in 154, including my avatar. I absolutely love that beautiful area. However above statements are true. FFTH is hammered. tons of hunters, mostly private. For last 10 years, every year that went by more and more farmers posted their land or sold it. Haven't found an area yet that can replace 154.

Be very very careful not to trespass. There are a lot of smaller subdivided properties and its very easy to move off of FFTH property. The FFTH signs may only be for the 10 acres of open field next to the road. The brushy draw next to it.....unposted private property, and the landowner is not required to post it. Do your homework before you go. I can think of at least a dozen examples in 154 where this is the case. A lot of times the FFTH ends where the good hunting starts.

Good luck!
Cheers!

I may get shot for this but 162 is better. More land, more places to camp. Still a ton of competition but...if you don't have access to private in 154 it can be a tough road.  :twocents:

There are some big tracts of blm land that you can camp on, but access on some of them is tight. I fortunately know one of the farmers there that has large tracts of land all over the county. Some is ffth, but like was mentioned above, those areas are usually crops fields not the big draws and timber you want to hunt. However, do some research on what is around those ffth areas because they can hold deer. I've found some pretty small grassy areas surrounded by crop fields that deer bed in. You wouldn't know it until you started glassing.

All depends where in the unit you end up. If you have an idea of where or what terrain you would rather hunt I could give a little more info.

That area has some land to hunt but camping area will be slim unless you go to one of the parks outside Dayton.
