Hunting Items Checklist?
« on: October 07, 2013, 11:07:27 AM »
So I am on lunch break at work and put together a checklist for my upcoming elk hunt. I havent been this giddy waiting for a hunt in a long time. This is my first year muzzleloading. There are a few things on my checklist that are personal to me. Like a coyote call, I never hit the woods without it, its open reed and can actually make more than coyote calls with it, it makes a good cow call sometimes. The bore snake is probably not needed in the pack, but the gun I have only takes 60 seconds to remove breech plug and nipple so I like the idea of having it with me. I wont be more than 2 miles from the truck, more often closer to a mile, so some things most would bring along, I leave in the truck (like rain gear unless I am sure Ill really need it). Anything I am missing? My tags, gun and worn clothing I didnt put on the list, those are givens. Any other things for a muzzy hunt that would be helpfull?

for in-the-truck, I like to add mousetraps...mice try to get into all your stuff...sucks to come back in the middle of the hunt for more food but find the mice got into it and chewed holes in all plastic bags and even in the engine.

I'd add 2 flashlights. Never know when you'll have to pack out or field dress in the dark. Also I pack a fire kit in a double ziplock.  And I pack a few lawn trash bags, they can work as a rain poncho or for a water still in emergency.  Also game bags in the truck if you didn't already have that

Flashlights in the truck I guess I overlooked, most the time they are in there all the time anyway. I do tend to forget to stick any in my pack every now and then cause I get spooked like a kid when I am in the woods in the dark alone. I am perfectly fine if there is someone there, but man for some reason it just hits that spot in my spine when I am alone. I feel like a little kid afraid of boogy monsters haha.

The only reason you get the feeling that there is a boogie man out there in the woods is because there is one....He's looking for you, only you.... don't be scared. :chuckle:

Why not have your game bags with you? You've got coyote calls on an elk hunt but no game bags. You don't want to waste a trip to the truck without carrying a quarter or some meat out. Plus you want to get that meat hung up to cool.
