Shoot one or not?
« on: October 07, 2013, 05:00:21 PM »
Here's my dilemma.  I've been watching all summer 6 shootable mulies around my house. (one big 3 point, couple of small 4 points and 3 smaller 3 points) They've been coming out virtually every evening either right near my house or  close enough that we've seen them regularily.  They have become almost tame as they've gotten used to our presence and my wife taking pictures of them.  Was over at the new house again this weekend and sure enough, there they were again.  I've really developed a problem with the thoughts of shooting one.  Seems more like an unfair harvest than it does an actual hunt.  I know there patterns well enough that I'm pretty confident that I could whack one opening morning pretty easily.  All the ground around me is open with no other homes close by and it's all private, I think I'll just let them grow bigger and continue to tease myself.  What would you do?

Depends......how big is big............how bad do you want meat......and they may still pull the old disappearing act before the opener.  If I could determine one was atleast 4 1/2 yrs old.....maybe.   :twocents:

shoot one and then hunt something else, getting a kill is better then waiting and having them go into night mode when you go out hunting and see nothing, you will never be sure that they will even be around during the day during hunting season. i hunt for meat so its just my  :twocents:

Offer up an opportunity to a youth hunter that is just starting out or never harvested anything, maybe an elderly or disabled hunter if the area is relatively accessible for them.

Lots of ways to change someone's luck, start them off or just give them one more or one last chance...

Just a thought to consider.

I've thought about a youth or disabled hunter- probably could take one very easily from our back deck!  (The big 3 is a big deer, one of those should have been a 4 point but didn't branch deer.  Horns are twice above the ears  and I'm guessing in the 24-26" range.  I've shot many big deer in my years growing up in Utah, so I'm fairly familiar with what makes a "big deer".)

Wouldn't shoot one and would not want anyone else to shoot one. No sport in it if you say that they are pretty much tame. Just not my thing. I would rather shoot a little buck and have to hunt for it.

I would cull one of the smaller deer and leave the others alone. It's pretty awesome to have deer you can see every day and if you could watch them grow through the years and see there offspring and recognize them that would be better than watching t.v.!

It sounds like you've been hunting them the whole time.  You know there patterns now.  When and where they will be.  Im pretty sure everyone would love to know the patterns of a couple nice bucks.  If you dont take one someone else is sure to get to them some how.  But who knows maybe monday after the opener with all the pressure you might have more bucks there if its all private.  Good luck i wish i could have the same dilemma.   :twocents:

:yeah:  Try to find a kid......that would be fun   I wouldn't get anything out of shooting a deer out of my back yard, but would deffiantly let a kid get his first buck.
We have been on the back padio skinning a buck, and had a spike and 2 does walk right up and sniff the buck that was hanging from the rafters. They sat at the apple tree 25ft away while we continued working on the deer.

Personally I'd have a hard time shooting a yard deer.  Wouldn't even consider it a hunt really, more of just a bland kill. I guess if you have trouble getting it done during the season and decide you want to just fill the freezer you'd always have the option in your back pocket.  :dunno:

#1 rule don't shoot the house deer, exceptions would be a grandkids first and then after that they are hunting the mountain.

Several years ago I had a nice buck who spent all season in the front pasture, He would cross in front of the school bus and pose for the kids. Bus Driver told me to teach the deer better. One day I was fooling around the house and had a car pull up. Asked if I owned the place. Told him nope why do you ask? I would like to shoot the deer behind your house. Told him the Lady who owned the house lived in Spokane, I guess you could call her! I gave him the phone number and then told him where a phone was. he thanked me.
Off he started to call. I stopped him as he was leaving and told him I had been sleepin with her for the last 25 years and I wasn't Dumb enough to shoot it, But knock your self out.

My oldest son had a buddy of his come over one year and as they pulled down the drive there was a buck in the back pasture. This person starts scrambling for a rifle. Kid asked what you doing? I'm going to shoot that deer! He tells him I'm about 15 minutes behind them and he's not sure you can get it loaded and out of here.

With as much pressure as they get some places are just a quiet zone for them. They have food, water and cover.
Had a buck one year bed next to the transformer in the drive he could watch the front and back pasture along with the feeder and he stayed maybe warm from the heat off the box.

So I'd say if you chose find a kid! Or get a good camera.

I quit seeing game animals as pretty little creatures long ago. I now see them as steaks on the hoof. Maybe that sounds strange but it is that way. Sure they are majestic and drive all of us insane as the crisp morning air is upon us.  I buy a tag to kill a deer, how , where, when doesnt matter.

But I sure would find me a kid if I could to get them into a first time deer. The smile on their face would last you a lifetime!!!!

It will be no diffrent shooting one of them when they are bigger in say , two more years....  For what bigger antlers?   You will still see them as pets...

You should turn them into a project this winter and next year.  Feed them and keep them around during the winter.  Get their sheds in the spring and maximize antler growth with feed.  Just to have pretty bucks to look at.

Or allow youth hunter(s) to hunt them.

I understand your dilemma. Here's what I suggest. Go to Fred Meyer or another department store. Find the Men's clothing section. Find some man pants and put them on. Then go shoot one of the deer. No need to thank me. I'm here as a free service to our waffling and wavering members!

I really like the idea of helping out a youth, vet, disabled, seasoned.....somebody out there needs to fill a tag. Maybe a family isn't doing so well and could really use a surplus of grind and steaks....I can come up with plenty of reasons. Perfect example could be the moose thread........guy is old old old and finally gets a moose and says "maybe next year I do need to pick up a tag".....could be a perfect candidate.....only you can decide if the reasons are right for you.

I'm gonna leave them alone-I don't need the meat and I've shot many, many deer in my life.  I'd let a youth take one, but I don't think it's the proper way to introduce someone to deer hunting.  Think I'll just go down Saturday morning and try to get a couple of pictures. (Im better with a rifle than a camera though)  Interesting responses-thanks.

My thoughts as well,  I sat here pondering if I should ask if you would maybe let my 9yo and my GF get their first buck ever, but  I decided not to ask. I want my son to learn to hunt and teach him that things do not always come easy. Sure he would want to shoot his first buck, but maybe some other time. Right now he can be happy to shoot his first deer should we see a doe for him to shoot. My GF and I are both Vets and I am sure she would have to say no as well. She likes to get out and get the experience herself. I can just hear the convo now, she would say what is the point of shooting them when we can just go buy the meat and save money. No thrill in that!  :chuckle:

Now if it was my land, I might let my son shoot one, but other than that, I may open it to a Disabled vet but that would be all. I know it may sound a bit selfish, but I have been over twice as well as my GF and like many others we have had friends disabled or worse.  :dunno: All in all it is your land and your choice. We thank you for even considering the thought.

Its all up to you. I personally have no problem shooting a legal deer in a legal place. One of the spots I hunt could he considered yard deer but I only shoot mature bucks there and does when I have a tag (to try akd help the landowner with damage) I shot my buck this year there becauee he was the biggest and oldest I had on my cameras consistently for tye summer. Another spot I hunt is a farm that only I have permission on and the deer there are pretty easy to kill with a rifle because I know what they do and wjere they go. Archery is different as its all crp.
To the op... you can shoot one or not shoot one. Either way I won't rag on you for making a choice.

Well, I didn't want to shoot one, but my younger brother really wanted some venison-so he took one of the smaller 3 points that's been hanging around there.

Ok....okay........now you've done it...............a nice respectable muley.........I'd shoot that one in the yard every year. I'm no where near picky enough to pass.

Well done helping out a family member with some access and meat for the freezer.

I'll try to get some pic's of the other boys, but I'm really lousy with a camera.  They're a lot easier to shoot with the rifle than the piddly camera I have.  I didn't mean to imply this was a small buck, just not the biggest over there.  Next year, if they keep hanging around, I may really consider taking a youth or a disabled over.  Seem to be a lot of small spikes and two's around this year, so the herd in our area seems to be dong well enough.  Mulies have really taken over, used to be mostly whitetails but haven't seen many of them around the immediate area this year.

We've shot a few behind the house.  My wife's first deer was one.  Her second deer was another, after many days of hunting elsewhere and a second deer/doe with her bow after the buck she got turned out to be injured and sour.  My first one on the island was in the upper yard, a doe during late ML.  I've shot two bucks near the house, though had not seen either before then.  And, the last buck behind the house was one we had been watching for three years and finally decided it was time or he would probably get shot by someone else during the rut.

So, we have shot 8 of 18 (in the last 8 years) in the yard (10 acres).  Of the other five deer that friends have gotten, a doe was shot in the upper yard by a dad after his daughter passed on ten shot opportunities that day.

We enjoy watching the deer but they are, in the end, still just walking meat boxes.   ;)

I find it disturbing how judgemental people can be toward fellow hunters (not just this thread) while LEGALLY hunting.  For those of you saying no, would it be the same answer if this was near a cabin that he had the luxury of going to frequently during the summer, had some trail cams set up and had patterned the, apparently more wild, deer?

Congrats on getting your bro some venison and wish our "little" ones were half that size.   ;)
