Shaw Island buck (pic added)
« on: October 26, 2013, 09:15:05 PM »
Hunted the land we had permission for this morning. Didn't see a single deer  :bash:
Decided to go to camp and process my sons doe he shot yesterday. Got here all cut up and put in the cooler. Thought we should get more ice. Went to the General Store. While there a local asked my opinion on beer: I was only guy in there.
Well being that we were in camo she asked how the hunting was. Told her about Trstan getting his deer and that we didn't see a thing this morning. She asked a few more questions and when I mentioned who's land we were hunting it obviously was a good reply. She said oh they are great people. You wanna hunt my land? Hell ya! She has 40+ acres and we had seen deer there before.
Once at her place we bs' d a bit then she gave us the lay of the land. Pear, apple & plum orchards all planted in the 1880's. She said she has several bigger bucks that frequent.
We busted brush for a couple hours and as we got to the pasture. DEER! 5 of them. 3 does and 2 bucks. A nice 3pt and a small & tall forkie. They were about 180yds out and the back dropped was a road 20yds past. Shooting a slug gun I'm not comfortable with that distance. I low crawled approx 60 yds to close the gap. The entire time I was only moving while I saw the does with their heads down. About 45yds into my stalk I noticed the 2 bucks crossed onto non hunting property. Oh well. Its 6pm and we leave tomorrow.  Time to get some meat. I crawled the final 15yds and picked out the biggest doe. I watched them for a painstaking 5 minutes as they moved to a better backstop. Final range meter reading 118yds. Deep breath relax aim just behind the shoulder BOOM! Kicked and half ran about 30yds and stood there. It was now 6:10 and light was fading. I put a second round into him and dropped in its tracks.
This whole time my son was back at the tree line watching and wondering what was taking so long. Before I confirmed he was down he came running. He dropped dad. I stood and scoped it to see it laying dead. Ok gather up gear.
Walked up tap the eye with muzzle and lookie there: buttons. No wonder it was bigger,  it was a small buck. Fist bumps again and start dragging him to the truck.
The land owner requested I bag the gut pile and did so per her wish. I also gave her the liver. Shes gonna feed it to her dog, since she is a vegetarian.
2 days and 2 tags punched. Couldnt be happier and great memories with my son.

Pic won't post from the island. Maybe D-Rock or h20hunter can post. If not I will tomorrow.

Nope. Started off Ben Nevis Loop which is where my son got his deer. I got mine on Smugglers Cove/ Blind Bay.

Congrats again....after your son got his I totally forgot about you hunting. We were at a halloween party when you sent the text......bbd! I was running around like an idiot trying to find the wife to show her. I only had to explain the "baby buck down" connotation. She said the same thing....bet it is going to eat well.

I would do a euro mount....no really i would...
To hunt and butcher an animal is to recognize that meat is not some abstract form of protein that springs into existence tightly wrapped in cellophane and styrofoam.

No joke I too would euro mount that. First buck is a big deal.
Now then, get your equipment—your quiver and bow—and go out to the open country to hunt some wild game for me.  Gen. 27:3
