spend my $$;) 7mm build
« on: October 27, 2013, 09:33:06 PM »
Goal,
Have the yehawww to still kill a deer at 600-700 if I so desired (not likely, hunt archery mainly). Want to ping steel at 1K+ as well.
Cheap, but solid.... less than 2K if I can before glass.

I'd like to build a 7mm mag. Thinking a new ADL, with a B&C medalist stock and either a vias or edge break (want the wife to not be scared of it). Not sure if I should re barrel, or shoot the factory barrel first....
Trigger is another point im not 100% on... Never dealt with the X mark.

most likely 20moa bases and larue quick release style rings.

Probably start of w/ 168 berger's, but like the added BC of the 180's....

Torn between Bushnell HDMR in H58/59, or a night force 3.5-15 (reticle TBD) most likely mil/mil.

(BTW, although not as much experience as I'd like, I have some in the long range world from 500-1200).

Feel free to pick apart. Mainly interested in how I can do it better/ cheaper, but still quality.

Let er rip fellers....

WB

I would go 7 short mag (or 7 SAUM) , pitch the xmark trigger and use the HDMR

If shorter and fatter is always better, then I suggest the .50 Fat Mac:

There is a point of diminishing returns.  Nothing at all wrong with the tried-and-true 7mm Rem Mag as a long ranger.  Completely fits your bill and will likely be the best return on investment if you ever had to sell it.

Call a reputable builder. They will/should be able to tell you where your money will be best spent.

B&C medalist is very nice, love mine, but it is heavy.

Here's what I would do:

Savage 116 in any magnum caliber- $550 new from Bud's Gunshop, $450 for a used one.
26" Stainless Varmint Contour McGowen barrel in 7mm Rem Mag- $300
Vias Brake installed by McGowen- $225 (this could be done cheaper by a local shop)
New trigger (take your pick)-$125
Manners T4 stock- $575

This is for a stainless steel long action 7mm mag. If you went with a 7 WSM on a blued action you could save a few hundred bucks. Going to a short action would also allow you to buy a B&C Tactical Medalist stock for half the price of the Manners. After selling the factory barrel, stock and trigger you'll save another $150 +.

These are all in stock components which are ready to ship and your gun could be at the range by next weekend. With careful shopping you could come in under $2500 including high quality optics. I would expect a gun built with these components to shoot in the .3 MOA range. I've never been disappointed by a McGowen barrel. :twocents:

Look at Holland brakes. They are flat out amazing in recoil reduction and muzzle jump.

You can kinda see my "cheap" long range deer rifle in the background.   Kimber Montana with a 26" #4 Krieger.   Chambered in 7 wsm.   Cost me about $1800 plus $950 for the 6.5-20x50 Leupold with M1 knobs and 3 different elevation turrets.  Shoot 168 bergers at 2900 fps.

It'll ring 18" steel plates at 1100 yards.   This coyote thought he was safe at 656 yards a couple weeks ago.
