ID Tag Help

Hello everyone.  I took the trappers ed course earlier this year and I'm excited to start trapping, but have a question about ID tags.  I remember reading someone saying to cut up a pop can or something similar and use a permanent marker to put my ID# on it.  Is this legal?  Does anybody have any other cheap alternatives to buying engraved ones?  How do you attach them?  The regulations use the word chain to attach the ID.  I'm just trying to make sure I'm doing things on the up and up.  Thanks.

I use to try and make my own but they just never turned out very well. Even so called permanent markers wear off.

You can order them from places like F&T and they are very inexpensive for bulk prices. They need to be metal construction and secureling fashioned to the trap. The metal tags actually have the information stamped into them so theres no risk of it wearing off.

I use hog rings to fasten mine on and they work well.

Thanks for the info.  I prefer making things myself, but looking at the prices they are pretty cheap.  Looks like I'll have to find another excuse to order something from F&T.

I used 1/8" piece of sheet metal engraved my ID number on them. Drill small holes on each end and use zip ties to attach top of the cage. That's what I do anyway.

The best way to attach tags is to roll them around one of the wires in the cage. Less apt to get tore off.
A trap tag left unrolled is likely to be chewed on by a caught animal. It attracts their attention and they bite at it.

The way I tagged all my traps was pretty easy and cheap. I just bought a number punch set for $12 and punched my ID# into 3 inch long pieces of 3/4" banding wire used for banding shake and shingle pallets. The banding wire is soft enough to easily bend around the cage material but strong enough that animals will have a hard time tearing them off.

Hmm, I think that is pretty far fetched someone would even think to do that if they could. I would be more comfortable with the Wild ID # then my name and address.

blank dog tags and cheap metal stamp kit,  piece of cake, it all depends on how in depth you want to get, really not neccesary, you can use cut up pop cans and stamp them, but the edges are sharp, a handful of dog tags are cheap

I found a metal stamp kit on sale at Harbor Freight for $10 and will use whatever metal I have laying around to make the tags.  I like the idea of using banding wire.  Probably have some laying around the warehouse.  Thanks for the ideas everyone!
