Is NOW a good time to get into reloading?
« on: January 12, 2014, 04:06:53 PM »
I'd like to start reloading for my .308win.  I'm curious though, from what I've seen online at least, powder and primers are still scarce.  I don't want to drop the coin on reloading gear just to have it sit around because I can't find components.  Not sure what the situation at my local gun shop is as I haven't ever gone in there looking for reloading supplies, but I'll start looking now.  So, for those of you that reload, are you still having a hard time finding supplies?

I know I could buy the gear and just wait out the supply issues, but for the cost of the reloading setup that's quite a bit of .308 that I could buy right now...

Components are starting to become more readily available, at least for me.  Always a good time to start reloading, what are your reasons for your interest? Just curious ...

They are slowly becoming available but not always the powder sources I'm looking for. Primers and bullets seem pretty steady right now.

Thanks guys, good to hear!  My primary reason for reloading is because I want to push my .308 out to 1,000 yards and want the consistency/control that reloading would give me.

Just start out buying the components slowly. Check the pawn shops in your area and let them know what you're looking for. I use Varget powder for my 308. When you see a pound, buy it, just like the dies. It won't hurt as bad as going out and spending a grand for everything right off the bat.
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

I think you'll be fine. The 308 is pretty versatile in the powders that it will burn. You can simply go with the powder or powders that are available. People like myself who have been reloading for years have trouble finding our favorite powder, but if you're just starting out it shouldn't matter much to you. Just go with whatever you can get and you should be able to make it work. As for bullets, it's the same situation. Many types of bullets you can't get right now, but I'm sure you can find something that will work in the 308.

It's always a god time. Just buy stuff here and there, pretty soon you have a good stash built up

It's always a good time to get into reloading IF you shoot on a regular basis throughout the year.  Especially if you want to stretch your long range shooting as factory ammo is much better than it was many years ago, but tailoring your loads by handloading will give you more versatility.

Kesselrings and Dave's Sports, even Yeager's are starting to get components in a little more often. There are internet options too. Holiday sports sometimes has something we need...

There's no time like the present to start reloading. Like was said in the other posts, just start picking up a little at a time and before you know it you'll be a hoarder like the rest of us  :yike:
