Montana app question
« on: January 21, 2014, 02:49:04 PM »
We are hoping to go to Montana this year on a landowner deer hunt. We would like to get a bonus point for elk as well but does that mean that we will have to buy an elk tag and then put in and get the 80% back if not drawn or how does that all work? We are in the point accumulation stage in a few states right now.

You will want to:

Apply for the deer/elk combo

Apply for a LE permit for elk

Select the option to return the elk tag if not drawn

You will still receive a deer combo license.

So don't even buy the landowner deer tag since the deer/elk combo is pretty much a slam dunk?

Land owner tags are not what they seem. For one, you can only hunt deeded land owned by the landowner. Two, your odds of getting more than one LO tag is slim.

Your best bet is to go the combo route and just hunt his land if you are looking for more than one tag. :twocents:

If you want accumulate bonus points for an elk permit, this is your only option.

Also, keep in mind that if you draw a LE permit, you are then limited to only hunting the area you drew the permit for.

What phool and JLS said is the best way to go.  If your LO deer hunt is not a good one your not limited to hunting that land.
Or, you can try the hard to draw unit again but the surefire way to get points for elk and not draw is what JLS said.

Montana is not like Washington when it comes to permit allocation, they do not allocate a certain number of permit tags to individual units, but rather lump all the permits in one and issue for all the 'like numbered" units. As a example, we hunt unit 704 and apply for bull elk tags. There are approx. 150 tags offered, but those 150 are good for all the "700" numbered units.

This isn't entirely true.  The general elk licenses that allow you to kill a bull generalize what region, but LE tags are all unit specific.  Plus another thing to consider is what unit this "landowner" tag would be good for.  Although not many, there are units in Montana that are draw only.  If he was to just put in for a general tag, he may not be able to go hunt the land he wants if it is a draw only unit.  He may want to look and see what unit and make sure it can be hunting with a general tag, because he may have no option but to put in for the LO permit. :twocents:

I am a little lost but if we weren't trying to get just the bonus point then we would just get the landowner deer tag. We are planning to hunt with two other members on here that hunted it last year. We aren't worried about hunting places other then the property they have lined up.

Then buy the deer/elk combo, apply for the toughest draw bull unit, likely wont draw and will be given the option to have your elk portion purchased back.

Is the unit that you are wanting to hunt open to a general deer license tag holder?

Ok, that sounds like what we will need to do in order to get the point. Sorry to be a pain guys but just want to make sure we do it right. I will have to check and make sure that the unit we are planning to hunt is open to a general deer tag.
