Anyone been to Oak Creek?
« on: February 11, 2014, 09:22:39 AM »
Any elk at Oak Creek? Hope to take the wife and kids up there for some viewing this weekend, did the snow push any down?

I haven't been up there yet but I would assume there will be some elk there after this last good snow.  I had 9 inches at my house in Yakima.  Calling for more mountain snow throughout the week also.  Let us know if you make it

Was there last tuesday and was maybe 150 mostly up on the ridges, zero bulls. Went saturday and there was about the same. Again no bulls not even a spike. Went again sunday hoping a day of the snow pushed them down and I was correct  sunday was the 1st day they started feeding them. While they were loading the hay elk were piling off the flat up top to the feedlot. When we left there were probably 400-500 and multiple big bulls.

They will feed up to about 1200 elk each winter. Approximately 90 bulls.  I think that heard is about 3000 animals for the Yakima herd?

I was just surprised because I thought most of the elk had not come down yet due to the lack of snow.

Good news. We enjoy seeing the elk every year, kids especially. We hit the Sportsmens show and then Oak creek. Throw in some crabs at Sea Galley, and thats a good family day.

I've shed hunted that exact location

You missed a few from the spring then  :chuckle:

Ive come across a couple nice little bucks hanging around there late summer. I was caught off guard amd spooked them. Farthest east I've seen any deer in that area anyways. Seen some nicks rattlers but didn't wamt to waste a rifle round on one, though I was tempted to use a stick. :chuckle:

Missed one :chuckle: also there are 400 or so down and 20 or so branched bulls. A couple 7 points. There are a hell of a lot more hanging above the station.  Count today in the nile was near 200 with a few nice bulld up there as well.

Went to Oak Creek today and there wasn't any snow. Feeding time is 1:30 PM every day and I got there around 2:15. There were around 300-400 elk right down low in the feed area with multiple big bulls including the 7 points mentioned but only 1 spike that I saw. It's definitely a cool place and I would recommend taking the wife/girlfriend and kids. Don't forget your discover pass though.

Everybody on here should have the WDFW pass that you get for free with your hunting license. So no need for a Discover pass.

It's WDFW land so either one will work.

From the WDFW website:

Quote

Winter feeding for elk, big-horn sheep underway

WDFW’s winter feeding program is now underway at the Oak Creek Wildlife Area, where hundreds of hungry elk and big-horn sheep are descending from the high country to dine on alfalfa hay and pellets. Bald and golden eagles are also on display throughout the area. The visitors center is open, but it's always a good idea to check the recorded message on the headquarters phone (509-653-2390) for updates on feeding and elk-viewing tours. Visitors should be aware that a state Discover Pass or WDFW Access Pass is required to park at the Wildlife Area. Visitors can purchase a Discover Pass at the area headquarters or online from WDFW’s website.

The state throws up their Discover Pass signs on WDFW lands too, but in about 1/10th the size of the font of the 'Discover Pass Required' it says 'Or Vehicle Access Pass'. The size of font that you wouldn't be able to read it driving by at any speed.  Tricked my Dad into purchasing a DP for the 1 place he wanted to go, he never spends time on state land so he's never bought one.  He was PISSED when I pointed out that I was nearly certain that WDFW lands were okay with our pass issued with licenses.  Sleezy tactics to spur DP sales.  :bdid:

I was at Joe Watt last Wednesday, many elk down.  Came back south route on Wednesday and stopped at Oak Creek and same thing with hundreds of elk all down right at the fence / viewing deck.

I need to dig up some old pics from the mid 90's. when I used to help feed the elk on the E burg side. Pretty cool having a big bull take alfalfa from your hand.

Wow those sneaky little.... I went with my brother who already had a discover pass but I'm glad that I now know you only need a Vehicle Use Pass. I'll spread the word, thanks for the heads up.

Yeah, went Saturday and Sunday. Pretty cool to see them all especially for the kids. Their count indicated about 500 head in there.

Indians shot them all and over havest. That is why they are proposing more cow tags.

That is true. A few individuals from the Yakama Nation slaughter bulls all winter just so they can sell the antlers to taxidermists.

has anybody looked at the population at the upper oak creek feeding spot?  Right next to the river?  I went to that one last year and there were more elk bulls/cows feeding there than at the main feeding lot? :dunno:

Though i'm not denying the below mentioned statement of this also being a contributing factor.
