Winter finally showed up at Watt Canyon
« on: February 11, 2014, 10:46:36 AM »
There was about 8 inches of snow at Watt Canyon this weekend.  The elk feeders said there are somewhere around 550 to 650 elk at the feeding station today and more coming every day.  Contrary to popular belief among those of us who hunt this area, there really are some elk left!  There are some dandy bulls in the group too.
And I think God must be a cowboy at heart
He made wide open spaces from the start
He made grass and trees and mountains and a horse to be a friend
And trails to lead ol' cowboys home again

With a winter like this they could winter wherever they want. I'm sure that there are elk that never step foot in those feed stations.

There are a lot wintering around the windmills too.  The grass is still above the snow everywhere so they don't really need the feed.

That's cool

We stopped by Oak Creek feed station sat afternoon and only seen about 200 at the most hanging around. They weren't feeding them yet and there wes not one single bull in the buch. Spotted every head I can see from the parking lot and didn't see one set of antlers .

They stay away from the muckleshoots. A lot over here winter in the 346, 352, and 364. I have seen a herd winter west of bumping lake before.

So uhhhh.......where the elk at? :chuckle: I've seen a couple of herds winter down by..........ohhhhhh, you almost had me there. :chuckle: trying to get guys to spill the beans on nonwelfare elk, I see what you did there. :chuckle:
