Bullquest's 08' Montana Buck
« on: November 17, 2008, 06:45:17 PM »
Here's a few shots of my Montana buck. After arriving at our destination on Sunday afternoon, my buddy Randy and I went on an evening hunt in the National forest area as we didn't have time to get to our usual area till the morning. We seen a number of deer including a few smaller bucks, but decided to hold off.
The following morning found us on a ridgetop overlooking miles of coulees and ranchland.
We had spotted several smaller "basket rack" 3-points that were less wide than there ears. My goals on this hunt were to harvest a deer that was wider than its ears, long tined, and had decent mass through out. After walking this ridge for a few hours we stopped to look over this saddle below us. I soon spotted a decent buck. He was walking up hill away from us. After we both glassed him over and liked his width and height, I decided to take him. The only problem was I ranged him at 491 yards! I knew my bullet drop at that distance and had good shooting sticks, so I set up to shoot. After waiting for him to turn mostly broad side, I touched off my shot and he immediately dropped with a shot through the lung! My partner could hardly believe I had hit him and I was happy that I had practiced some some long distance shooting!
After walking down to the buck he was in the same spot but still alive. I finished him through the neck and then the work began.
A few days later we had both tagged out on whitetail does and our trip was complete, minus the 1100 mile ride home.

Nice job Kyle!

You better get in and show me some pics from your trip.  I better get out more, I didn't even know you and Randy were going to MT.  I figured after moose hunting you were done for the year.

Congrats to you and Randy!

Mike

It is a Remington model 700 LSS chambered for 300 ultramag. I had a muzzle brake installed because I was tired of the broken blood vessels on my shoulder after only 1 box of shells! I also had the barrel floated and dialed the trigger down to 3lbs.It's topped with a Leupold 3.5 x 10 x 50 vari x III. It do put some hurtin' on those deer!
