I'm with you Kentrek. I don't see how they can register the #1 mule deer out of Lewis County. Wouldn't it still be considered a blacktail on this side of the Cascades; a crossover probably but a mule deer?

If it is east of I-5 it is a mule deer. Boone and Crockett has no designation for a "cascade" blacktail or any deer other than a blacktail is west of I-5 and a mule deer east of I-5.  Same for pope and young. NW Big Game Records, on the other hand, has a cascade blacktail category.

In 1987 I had a blacktail scored by Jay St. CHarles.  He made me point out on a map he had, exactly where I shot it.  He then proceeded to place a transparent overlay on the map, and it had the line on it where they differentiated between blacktail and mule deer.  It was definetly west of the crest, but no where near I-5.

So when that buck was killed, even if the line was where it was in 1987, there was a large portion of Lewis county that would have scored it as a mule.  Besides, who hasnt seen mule deer west of the crest ????

Even if the line is now I-5 ( and I cant immagine it would be ), that would not change the facts from old rules and scoring.

I just googled it and checked boundaries for scoring deer in Wa. and the line is no where near I-5.........reading the boundary, it seems to me the line may have been moved east some, but certainly not west to I-5.

If you go to nw big game records top ten, they provide a map that clearly shows no mule deer in lewis county  :dunno: maybe I read it wrong but thats what I thought it said....it would be awesome to find out the story of that number one nontypical "mule deer"

Someone here on the forum has to have the Wa.St. Record book, no?
Some on this thread have asked about the back story of the buck/rack. I reluctantly tell it because alot of hunters despise the fact that it was found in an attic instead of harvested/killed in a long drawn out hunt. I have spent my share of time humping up & down mountains, laying in wait in wheat and corn fields, etc. so it doesn't bother me that it is what it is. That's why I am here to find out more about it starting with the metal tag. Yes, I have shown it to the WA.St. Game Dep. nothing, the WA.St. Forest Service again nothing. I can't prove it's a WA. buck yet but I can prove it's been in WA. in one place for over 50 years. The metal tags started at some point and ended at some point and may even have changed threw the years just like the Wa.St. auto license plate has if I may use that analogy. More info on the metal tags would be great but it's pretty hard finding someone "in the know" that is still alive!

very cool buck either way, it would be very cool to find out the back story. I have seen a number of old pics of my family and there kill but can't seem to find what happened to all the antlers, would love to have some on my wall from them.

I think my boundaries are mixed up with the elk boundaries. My apologies.
