Montana Deer Hunting 09
« on: November 19, 2008, 08:57:54 PM »
My dad and I are looking to hunt deer next year in Montana. Can anyone give me a good unit where there is a lot of public land or farmers that usually let you hunt? Not asking for anyones honey hole but just want to get started somewhere. I have read about the block program. Does anyone know a good area for the block program? Just looking for some helpful info. Please feel free to pm me if you could help. Thanks.  :)

Contact http://fwp.mt.gov/default.html and ask them to send you the block management information, ask to talk to a couple biologists.
The things that come to those who wait, may be the things left by those who got there first!

Lots of public in the SE corner. Just have to get away from the river bottoms where it's all private and usually leased to outfitters.

Sometimes I feel bad for the guys from Minnesota and points unknown that show up to that part of Montana, pay an outfitter a bunch of money then shoot a dink when they coulda done the same thing on public land and saved several thousand.  Wait, no I don't. More great public land for all of us.

Hunt hard, check out the block mgt, but get yourself some maps cuz there's lots of good public land out there and not a lot of hunters once you get off the road.

A buddy went to Broadus with tags but without a plan... found a few old-timers driving around in fish and game vehicles 'guiding' non-res hunters to public land and decent bucks- said there's alot of people around during general to point the way.  Shouldn't be hard to get into deer- prob. harder if your looking for a trophy though.

I'm told they are volunteers that would rather help hunters than hunt themselves... funny thing is that he thought he was in trouble when the truck came towards him- only to have this 80 year old guy tell him to hop in and come with to check out a big buck in the next draw.

Thinking you can call F&G or even local chambers if you know the city you want to go to.

That's awesome!  If you go to the little diner/truck stop over by the junction to miles city, the locals will point you in the right direction if they sense your a decent person - especially if they see you in there a few days in a row.
