This is the Cowlitz county blacktail from 1935

That's awesome. Is that the pass time buck ? Pretty killer genetics in Cowlitz county

If I shoot a Blacktail buck that's standing on the west side of the PCT but I was standing on the east side of the PCT, does it matter what the DNA says? For that matter, if a Mule deer steps from the east side of the PCT to the west side, would the Blacktails DNA change in mid-stride?

Thank god you didn’t hypothetically shoot it as it was mid stride over the trail, or shoot when it was on the west side and it died on the east side.

Wow, I hadn't got there yet. If the animal was shot on the east side of the trail but actually died on the west side, what a conundrum that would be. Hmmm, that's gonna take some lookin in to?

Would Boone and Crocket or other record keeping orgs do a genetic test to determine if a blacktail is a record?  Just curious

This is not true at all. There is a magical force field barrier that prevents all blacktails and mule deer from crossing into each others territory. My great uncle showed me where there are a few spots that have weakened photon metaculators and those are the spots where you find benchlegs. Other than those few areas its gonna be either a mule deer on the East side or a blacktail on the West side of the trail. That's why they decided to put the trail on that line in the first place.

It was a joke, none of the "boundaries" mean anything. Why let someone else determine if your animal is a mule deer or a blacktail? There are clear and distinct differences in the 2 species. If I shot one East of their boundary but it looked like a blacktail then I would call it a blacktail. It is what it is. The books don't matter,  they are just for the people who want the attention.

I get the joke and agree the critters don't care about the "boundary".

I don't agree it exists solely for attention seekers however. And could make a case the attention seeking part is solely individual based and not what the "book" intends to do. Data from these records including DNA testing (not cheap) are information that is used to adjust the boundary and/or confirm species interbreeding and genetic dilution.

Still an amazing animal, but to see one be harvested in recent years with all the new scouting/camera technology would be really cool.

I second this - i was fortunate enough to get 132' blacktail (just got it B&C/P&Y scored) last year in cowlitz county. You don't find them often but when you do they are usually jaw droppers
