changing my outboard water pump ( need help )
« on: April 14, 2014, 09:24:15 PM »
I have a 1991 evenrude outboard 25hp long shaft. I have taken the 4 bolts off the lower unit and cant figure out how to disconnect the shift linkage. It will drop down the furthest in reverse but that is still only 2 or 3 inches ?? Any help or input would be greatly appreciated !

You need to pull off the two strainer covers. Inside there is the shift shaft with a nut that yo can unscrew to complete the separation.

Be careful putting I back together. There is the copper water circulation tube that bends easily and will really screw you if it does not reseat correctly.

:yeah: it is the shift linkage holding it together, why it drops down when you put shifter in reverse. When released the drive shaft should slide out of the powerheard and drop out atached to lower unit.

got it tore down, changed the impeller, reassembled and still no piss stream....  tore it down again made sure water came through the ports in the lower unit. The copper line is clear, I can blow air through the port on the motor head where the rubber hose connects to  :dunno:

Check the thermostats. Plugged passages can and will stop the telltale stream. Also, run a coathanger up the pee stream hole. Salt will plug it up and stop the stream.

Changed my thermostats and went from a dribble to a steady steam.

Is it on the boat in the water or are you running I with muffs?  Have had problems with muffs nut supplying enough water before.

The water pump speed is directly related to motor RPM the more you crank it up the more water it is pulling. Some muffs don't put out all that much so you may be short on water. I would recommend trying it in the water or if possibly get the lower unit in a big trashcan or tote of water and try running it again.

We had a number of there motors over the years and one of them started acting like yours and I never could figure it out the problem. It continued to run great but just had a weak tell tell. I checked cooling water temps an they were always in range so we just ran it, last I knew it had been replaced but was still running. It can be frustrating trying to figure these problems out though.
