SE Alaska Sitka Deer Hunt

I'm planning a trip to go sitka deer hunting in se alaska probably during the 2015 season. I've never been so I was wondering if anyone on here has hunted them and could give me some info. Where did you go? (I'm looking at Prince of Wales Island.) Where did you stay? (cabin, hotel, etc.) Average cost? Better to fly up there or drive? Any info would help. Thanks in advance.

There are plenty of out fitters up there if you wanna go that route but a DIY hunt is also easy enough, just takes some research and starting now was a good idea
Not to much for Hotels on POW island, but many different resorts spread out through out the island. The FS also has cabins that can be rented for cheap and im talking as low as $40 a night.
There are resorts that will offer a DYI package, you stay there, cook your own food and use there vehicle for a cost.
Not many car rental places up there, so be sure you get a reservation ahead of time if your not driving. If driving there are a few options for you but they all involve a ferry at at least one point.
we staied here for our DIY spring bear hunt. (good people too)

Here are a few links I saved, they should get you started
if you need any more, its all locked up un my head and its to much to type

Have not hunted for deer but did go up 4 times for a diy black bear combo fishing trip and we rented the forest service cabins. If you can I would rent the cabins like has been said super cheap and they are pretty decent. We always had to jump on the cabins right after the first of the year to reserve the good location and hunt time

Thanks for the info guys. I'm going to look into the cabins. It's going to be me and a couple other guys doing a DIY hunt. We're thinking about driving up there so the cabin would be nice to use as a base camp.

I've used some of the lodging/vehicle packages offered on POW island for fishing...its a very DIY friendly area with many road options and seemingly few people...I love it up there. I have not deer hunted up there yet so I will be curious to hear your stories. When I've been fishing I see a ton of does but usually few or no bucks down low near rivers/streams. Later in the year that will change of course. One of these days I will take enough time off to fish and hunt the high country for deer.

I stayed on pow island 6yrs ago or so at Thorne bay lodge, the cabin included unlimited use of a superduty truck. I was up there for steelhead fishing but they also did hunting. Most of there stuff is self guided and on your own for meals and such. Nice outfit and were willing to give out info at night about the area even if you didn't want to hire them to guide you for a day.
Good luck!
