Is this a legal spike?
« on: April 23, 2014, 02:50:51 PM »
I know the rules for a spike unit not a true spike unit are one side has to have "1" point.  And the eye guards don't count if they originate within the first 4" of the antler.  So would you shoot this elk in a spike unit?

Yep..
To hunt and butcher an animal is to recognize that meat is not some abstract form of protein that springs into existence tightly wrapped in cellophane and styrofoam.

The only question is whether to shoot him now or wait for him to turn broadside.

Looks like a slight chance the top of that right side might blade out and there might be a sticker pointing straight back, so I'd wait to confirm that - but the junk on the bottom is clearly not going to make him illegal.

I wouldn't. There appears to be a small branch off the top of the right antler.

I'd look him over........:bfg: If he's clean on the spike side.... Let'um have it!!! The branch from this angle looks just like a tree branch.
I felt like a one legged cat trying to bury a terd on a frozen pond!

Saw that to Bob.....for the sake of the pic I believe we are assuming that it is clean up top.
