Even with a gps, a compass is indispensable. When hearing a bugle, the only way to get a bearing on it with a gps is to walk toward it long enough to give yourself an accurate line to follow.

But still, a "real" compass is simpler and easier to use for something like that. However, I have found lately that more often than not, I "forget" and leave my compass at home. I never leave the GPS home.

He's probably referring to Mapsource, which is what comes with the Garmin GPS units. lokidog, if your GPS is 15 years old you really should consider getting a new one. They're so much better now. Cabelas just recently had the Garmin 60Csx on sale for $199. I paid $400 for mine a few years agol. Great unit.
