handgun metal is shredding!
« on: May 18, 2014, 02:00:15 PM »
This is my brothers 9mm Beretta, I told him i would post this on here and see if anyone has any ideas or have seen this before. The gun is about a year or two old and probably only about 100-200 rounds fired through it. on the back of the gun it looks to be almost like cast aluminum which is shredding off. That is not paint pealling away but actual metal coming off in shreds and gives you slivers from holding it. what is causing this? he has not contacted Beretta yet. hopefully they can fix or replace? I'm sure hes just using whatever standard over the counter gun cleaning oils. not sure if that would cause this or not?

Tell him to get a Glock 17. That will cure the problem

Almost looks like exfoliation or inter granular corrosion

About the only time I would spend thinking about this would be the amount of time it took me to package it up and ship to Beretta with a note politely asking them to fix it.

There are a lot of possibilities for hard coat anodizing to flake on cast aluminum parts.  Everything from finish prep, PH balance of anodizing stages, heat of tanks, silicon buildup in casting and connectivity issues with the racks.  I would expect Beretta to replace that immediately if he is the original owner.  Will probably do it for a fee if not the original owner.

Although it could be just the reason you need to have a cool Cerakote applied.  I sort of like the two tone pistols myself.  Been thinking of having one of mine done with a sand frame and the black Bruniton slide.

Good luck with Berreta on that,it looks about like the same problem a coworker had with the finish on his 2500 dollar over under shotgun, the wood finish coat  cracked and peeled off in strips. The man uses the gun 7 days per year in North Dakota and had never had it in the rain. They politely told him no go on fixing it and he politely wrote them back that he would NEVER buy another berreta product.

Sweaty palms or salty palms causing a reaction with the metal.  He should try to send it back or have it cerekoted.

My AL391 teknys is doing the same thing.  Its a berretta thing.  I kinda want to get it re done, but dont know if it would hurt the resale value or not.  I never take this one out when there is precipitatikn in the air. Always clean it when after shooting.

I have this same one, I'm keeping my fingers crossed on mine.

Naches - I am unfamiliar with that gun.  Is that a cast aluminum piece too?

Sweaty palms are  causing the sidearm that several members of NATO uses to fall apart?
